Forgive me if this is some place obvious; but is it possible to suggest a category to DMOZ as a civilian?

I have a site that largely contains lots of freeware MySpace customization stuff - but I don't seem to see anything related on the directory. I figured with MySpace being the 7th most trafficed site on the net according to Alexa with literally hundreds to thousands of these sites out there and growing - that this would be a good inclusion. I'll editor it if desired.

Really? I noticed MySpace itself is sorted here, but as it goes my site isn't one of these services - it acts only as an archive of freeware customizations. :confuse2: (what a great excuse to use that emoticon)

There are literally millions of other related pages out there too. For example, the two categories we hit on the largest are the 'icons' as such (being an icon website) there are nearly 2 million indexed pages in Google (MySpace Contact Tables, MySpace Online Icons).

Of course for the purposes of being listed, I believe my site is already pending inclusion for free desktop icons - however there are loads of exclusive and useful MySpace sites out there beyond the scope of my own that don't seem to be cleanly categorized in DMOZ, which is what made me think the new category would be a good idea for all parties involved.

I may be confused here, but I think you are asking why we don't have a My Space category.

We would not build a category based on where sites are hosted, whether it is my Space, Geocities, or Tripod.

We would, of course, consider sites based on their unique content, and listed them by topic (and possibly by physical business location as well).

If you are asking why all the of the My Space sites that offer icons are not listed yet, and answer could be as simple as: no editor has decided to undertake that effort; or because the sites have been found to be plentiful but lacking in unique content.

Do we/Would we want to list a million icon sites (remember, we list sites not pages) -- probably not, unless they all had sufficient unique content.

So what should you take away from this possibly misinformed answer:

1. We list sites not pages
2. Content is king
3. We don't care where the site is hosted
4. The existance of a site does not qualify it for a listing.

Apologies in advance if you already knew this.

I'm wasn't suggesting that actual "MySpace profiles" should be listed (although a search shows that some of them already are) - I actually don't consider them to be web pages at all :). I was just suggesting that legitimate web sites that contain such customizations don't seem to have a category that makes a whole lot of sense as of yet from what I can see.

I also understand that millions of pages shouldn't be added to DMOZ - however I can think of at least 3 dozen peers to the site I've created that could work very well in such a category (assuming one existed).

A Google search for 'buddy icons' returns about 3 million results - and DMOZ in fact has loads of related categories here - many proprietary even to the various instant messenging services.

A Google search for 'myspace layouts' returns over 2 million results - and it looks like we're still not in agreement on what could even potentially contain these sites until the DMOZ editors deem it necessary for a category of it's own. This is pretty understandable; considering the newness of the 'myspace explosion' as such - I just thought it would make for a very useful category or categories in the long-run.

Hmm, I guess you can. You can always contact its administrator. I myself would want that I also have lots of myspace tools myself. hehe... but anyway, I think what you should focus on is getting listed first. I bet there are other categories that is appropriate for your site.
