I have several questions concerning the section http://www.dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosted_Components_and_Services/.

1. I sent a request to add the service <URL removed> to this section several times. And no result. Can I ask about the status of my request? uCoz is a popular service and will supplement the section. About the service - <URL removed>

2. This section contains several services that are either not available or don't answer to this category:

- AffinityServe;
- FreeWebWare.com;
- Free Services;
- Video Game Webpage Services;
- WWWToolz.

3. I could become an editor of this section. My experience will help make it better.

1. No. Please see the Announcement at the top of this forum.

2. I've made some changes.

3. That category is way too large for a newbie. Please find some other category or one of its subcategories and apply. FAQ and General Advice is a worthwhile read.

Thank you for suggesting your site. I'm afraid we don't provide suggestion status reports; see this thread for more information. It is only necessary to suggest your site once, and repeated suggestions may cause the review process to take longer. There is more information about suggesting a site here.

Thank you for pointing out the sites that are no longer appropriate for the category. If you find more such links in the directory, there is a thread dedicated to such reports here. We're always grateful to people who help us improve the directory :)

The category Computers/Internet/Web_Design_and_Development/Hosted_Components_and_Services is much too large for a new editor, I'm afraid. New editors are encouraged to find a category with fewer than 100 listed sites. When you have been an editor for a while and shown that you understand the process, you can apply for larger categories.

Thank you.

[edited: bah, Jim was quicker, but I had links in mine!]

It's a strange policy and it will not make ODP better.

If the category has too many new editors, then why is it not possible to add good quality websites while dead links stay there for months?

If the category has too many new editors
I don't think either nea or I said that. We said the category is too large for a new editor. We start new editors out in small categories so that they can learn to do the job in a small sand-pit. It's a damage limitation thing.

Incidentally, the category doesn't have a 'become an editor' link for exactly that reason.

As to dead sites, our robots find many of them eventually but detecting repurposed URLs needs humans. That's why we appreciate constructive external reports such as the one you've just given.

You might have misunderstood our objectives and how we operate here. ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.
