No, the ODP is not a driving force behind Google. The ODP and Google are not connected in any way.

Of course you can achieve good rankings in Google without being listed in the ODP.

Not quite true - the Google directory has as its source the ODP directory. I'd call that a connection of sorts. Of cours,e how it affects rankings is a matter for debate.

Right you are Alucard. In case there's some confusion, Google Directory is what's found at directory.google.com, not in the normal Google search results.

Edit: Although Google may include Directory links when you do a normal search. As stated on their help page, "Look for the addition of editorial descriptions and links to Google directory categories in some search returns."

BTW to stop anyone else creating dummy threads by creating "Test message to find my other messages" posts: All you need to do to find your own posts if you haven't posted in awhile is click on Quick Links, then click on Who's Online, and then click on your own ID to bring up your profile page -- you can locate all of your posts from there.
