The State of a Category

Is there any way to find out what sort of state a particular category is in (i.e. approximately how many sites are waiting for review), and whether there is an active editor? I am considering applying to be an editor but I don't want to over-commit myself if the category is too busy.

As it happens, the category I'm interested in doesn't look like it's been worked on for a long time and I think any attention it gets would be better than none.

I should also make it clear that I have a site waiting for review in this category. As I understand it, this shouldn't preclude me from being an editor. In any case I am approaching this with a genuine desire to be useful.

Thanks,
Dave

If you look at the number after a category,it tells you how many in it, including all the categories beneath it. It will not tell you how many unreviewed. However, if there is a large number of existing listings, it's not a good place to start. large is subject to interpretation, maybe 30, for sure 100.

If there is an editor specific to the category, a name will appear at the bottom of the page, otherwise something like Volunteer. But remember that an editor can edit or categories underneath his named categories], so if you up the tree you will always find other editors. [And editall's can edit anywhere]

It's often advised to start with a small bottom level category, and then after you've shown you understand how to edit, apply for a place higher up the tree.

If you make an application be sure to identify sites in which you have an interest, it will not prevent editor acceptance.

I do not process editor requests, so take this as general information, not specific advice.

Thanks very much for the advice. It is a small category (11 listings) with the "Volunteer" link showing. I think I'll do a bit more reading through the material here, get a few links together and apply.

Make sure that your reading includes the FAQ and General Advice thread in this forum. There is a lot of good information there about becoming an editor.

Done - As far as I can see I've read "from cover to cover". Definitely wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing before applying. Thanks again.
