Tittle and descirption

Hi,

Recently web site of my client
was added to in the following category

http://dmoztools.net/Business/Industries/Fashion/Manufacture/Clothing/Women's_Wear/Formal_Wear/

I was wondering why the title is not having the complete name of the company which is "Padam Singh & Company" and in the descrption also no details about the company are there, when the web site features all the details of all the products company deals in.

We requested the following descrption:
Manufacturer and exporter of ladies readymade garments, home furnishing, accessories and Indian textile prints.

Would request you to please see.

regards

"Manufacturer and exporter of ladies readymade garments, home furnishing, accessories and Indian textile prints."

thats a brief description of what your company does, ODP does not offer classified listings, only website listings, looking at your website i would say that the current description is fine [if a little short]. i would have made the title a bit longer however, you can submit an update request to the cat editor if you want.

In reply to:

and in the descrption also no details about the company are there, when the web site features all the details of all the products company deals in.[emphasis added]

Since the website contains all of those details, it doesn't need to be in the description.

Since the website contains all of those details, it doesn't need to be in the description.

If thats the case, then why all other website are having descriptions??. I think description to be important as we know about the website through the description only.

And if somebody reads my description they will only know that we are into readymade garmnets, but we are also into home furnishing, prints and fashion accessories. And even he might be looking for home furnishing from India, he will never open my web site, nor the site will feature in search. So, I might loose out a potential customer.

Dmoz provide a way for the users to find things they are looking for, and if we do not have descrption how they will find any website, and the very concept of search engines will not be there.

Either we should work out something that is consistent for all the listing in the dmoz. Becuase for some listing we have detail descriptions and for some single word.

We, do appreciate the amount efforts put in by all the editors, but we (i.e. users) would appreciate that if something could be worked out to have some sort of consistency in all the listing.

The compaany I am talking about also have the web page listed in your directory in the following category
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Asia/India/Business_and_Economy/Industries/Import_and_Export/

Name of the company is same Padam Singh & Company (earler they were havinga webpage and now have gone for web site) and have the following description
"Merchant exporters of garments, textiles, fashion accessories, jewellery, sarongs, bags, antique furniture, recycled paper stationery and handicrafts. "

In view of this we requested for the change in descrption.

We wait for your suggestions and thanks

By that logic, why do websites need descriptions at all?

The description should help the end user. If telling what a company does in the description helps the users of the Open Directory, we should help the user.

You may have a point. But we need to be capable of making a compromise in the gray area between editorializing on the site's intent, and describing what is on the site. That's the art of editing, and some personal style must be allowed to enter into it. There are extremes on both ends, and we should strive for the *best* description.

Not saying I'm perfect, just striving. Continually. /images/icons/smile.gif

The guidelines, of course, provide content which is helpful to both editors *and* submitters, on describing sites.
http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/describing.html

I can say that, with the description at issue in this discussion, the one given by the editor is far from the best for an end-user. And ultimately, that's what editing is about.

I agree to all, but then it means description is relative term here, and what one person might think correct, other may find not.

What we all agree is that the description is for the user, and we can't get away from the description.
