Trying my very best to become an editor...

:confused: Hi,

I applied to become and editor and was turned down. Apparently the category I had
chosen was considered to be "to spammy" and not suitable for a new editor.

I then re-applied to another category and was turned down again.

In the email I received from he admin it explained that the category I applied
for was currently under revision and that this was the reason why my application
was declined (request - 20031116500442)

There was a note at the end of the email suggesting that I should try for another
category namely http://dmoz.org/Home/Consumer_Information/Travel/Airlines/

I then applied to this category and got a "turned down" mail in less than 2 hours
with no explanation at all (opendir - 8727500d6c918d8c6c7a81f5fb88f4dd)

Is there something that I am missing? I really would like to become an editor... :)

Keep trying. The fact you got feedback is a good thing. Read the application directions carefully and treat that application like a job application. Good Luck buddy - I have faith you can do it. Just remember your work is going to be used by millions of people. You at least have to have the potential to do it right or be able to adapt and adjust - because you learn something new every day working at the dmoz.org for free. You have to be able to accept you will always have to be able to improve - imho.

Hi Thehelper

Thanks for the info. However, I did not get any feedback the last time so I have no idea what I did wrong. :confused: Can you assist please? Here are the two URL's I submitted on my application so you can see for yourself:

* http://www.fodors.com/traveltips/
Fodors.com – Travel tips - Find basic travel information, tips and links.
* http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/tips/
Rick Steves' - Travel Tips - Offers travel tips. Find information on trip planning, health & safety, packing, relaxation, consumption & communications, transportation, and tours.

Thank you for any help/tips, it is appreciated :)!

Cheers

I don't know why your applications have been denied, but I can see a few issues that might have been a problem.

The category that you mention above is actually now redirecting to a new category called http://dmoz.org/Home/Consumer_Information/Travel/Air/ This category already has an editor and it's not a category that I would think would need two editors at the moment. It's not that busy.

The second thing is the sample URLs that you mention here. I don't see either of those sites fitting in this category. Did you look at the Description for the category? It is very important that the sample URLs that you select will be appropriate for the category. I would also probably not use deeplinks for examples. The root URLs there are already appropriately listed in other categories so listing deeplinks as examples in this circumstance is probably not the best idea.

Some areas have a lot of subtleties about what belongs that are really hard to figure out as a new editor. Why don't you try applying for something totally different, like a hobby or your hometown. A small locality in Regional is usually a pretty good place to start - sites are easy to find (just google for the town name and zip code) and pretty straightforward to title and describe.

Once you've become an editor, you will have access to internal resources to help you branch out into other areas of interest. And hey, persistance is an excellent quality for an editor!

Good Luck!

Thank you all for your good help. Since my motto is "Things are only impossible until they're not." I will try (and again) (and again) again :)
