"Update URL" seems to be functioning again

L

Lydia

Hello,

I had posted a message on General ODP issues > Site Update about problems updating URL, and was told to report any developments to this forum. Hope this helps if anyone has been facing a similar problem: eventhough I couldn't update a site listing yesterday evening, I have just updated it successfully a few minutes ago. Previously, I was getting a dialog box asking for username and password (as though I was an editor). Mind you, the first time I tried it tonight I still got the same problem, but the request for update went through on the second attempt.

Cheers,

Lydia

Thanks for the update. Based on this and some other things that I've read I'm guessing that the fix requires some synchronization to propogate out to the public side on a category by category basis. If that's the case, we might be seeing these intermittent login script issues for a few days yet.

My suggestion to other users experiencing this login dialog issue would be to wait a while and then try again as Lydia did above.

This guess turned out to be incorrect. There was one server that was causing the login issue to appear intermittently. That issue has been rectified.

My observation is that there are still issues with submitting that are related to server load, but the "asking for a login" issue should be resolved.

In trying to update my url within a category, I had to try numerous times before finally getting the "update received" message.

If it helps to troubleshoot, here is the path I took:

http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/update.cgi?where=Science/Environment/Water_Resources/Drinking_Water

http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/update2.cgi

http://dmoz.org/cgi-bin/update3.cgi - this is the page that produced errors

“Cannot find server or DNS Error”

I pressed back and tried submitting again – got “cannot be submitted from this form”

Started over and finally got the “update received” message.

The bad news is, this is an intermittent problem. It has (except for brief intervals) never been COMPLETELY non-working, and it's not COMPLETELY working yet.
