Unless there was a technical glitch while you were submitting the update request you need do it only the once. Updates, like submissions are looked at when and as an editor is available and inclined so no definitive time frame is available, though update requests are usually given priority by many editors.

Make sure you don't try to use the update process to keyword stuff your description, or the legitimate change will get toss out with the garbage.

Could multiple update requests (4 times over 4 months) cause a site to be removed from the directory?

No, making more than one update request is not a reason to remove a website.
But an update request may result in the removal of a website. Either temporary (move to another category) or permanent (website is not listable according to current guidelines).

When an update request is processed, the website is usually re-evaluated.

Sometimes, this results in it being moved to a better category (which might take some transit time) or being removed (because it's no longer the sort of website we want to list).

Doing that many update requests, if seen by a single editor in a relatively small category could easily be perceived as an effort to manipulate the description for ranking purposes, and it is possible that the requests are being ignored because they do not correct factual errors or do much more than waste an editor's time.

When I was an active editor, there were webmasters who had lost all credibility with me, and I gave their update requests little more than a cursory glance (and a few verbal curses) before punching delete.

Wasting editor time with vanity requests is not a good way to build a good reputation in the editor community.

Thanks for all responses.

My site had been listed in the same category for several years, and the only update requested was regarding the site’s migration from a regional sub-domain (in.) to www. The first request also suggested that a superfluous word could be removed from the site description (not to manipulate rank, simply to keep the description on a single line), but subsequent requests only mentioned the URL change.

The site content has not changed (only errors have been corrected, all pages have been consolidated under the one domain, and the whole site has been given a consistent layout with improved navigation) and I cannot imagine a more appropriate category.

These requests were my first communication with ODP since my site was listed, so I hope that editors don’t have such a short fuse as to dismiss my quadruple request and immediately label me as a time-waster with no credibility!

If all is well and the listing is in transit, how long might I expect it to be away? Or, if the listing has actually been deleted, how long should I wait (in vain expectation of its return) before coming to the realization that it has indeed been removed?

As callimachus explained earlier in this thread,
Updates, like submissions are looked at when and as an editor is available and inclined so no definitive time frame is available
In other words, a volunteer will attend to it, and there is nothing more you need to do. Thank you for helping to keep the directory current. :)
