I have a question about redirection and I'm going to use a similar example to my situation and hopefully someone can answer my questions or point me in the right direction to where they can be answered...

Lets say that I own the web site RalphsWidgets.com and its listed in a category @ DMOZ.

Lets also say that I owned the the following variations of the domain name:
ralphswidget.com
ralphwidget.com
ralphwidgets.com
Question#1: Can anyone tell me how I could redirect these users to ralphsWidgets.com without violating the rules of DMOZ? Currently I would set up "URL Redirection" in DNS.

Question #2: What if I decided to change the url to RalphsWidget.com (without the s)? I Would assume that I just go to the Dmoz category and select "Update URL," but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance.

1. You can have as many URLs as you want redirecting to another site, it's just that none of those can be listed. But the "target" URL can be listed without problem.

2. If the target URL changes than you would just do an update URL for it

Just to clarify what bobrat said:

If the target URL changes

so you would first make sure that the currently listed URL redirects to the desired new URL --if the currently listed URL continues to function properly (i.e., does not redirect), the ODP listing will not be changed!

Does one need to do a redirect?

What about just placing a note and link on the old URL that the site has moved to a new URL?

The reason I ask is because an auto redirect is undesireable in certain circumstances.

No, one doesn't HAVE to do a redirect. If the site move is obvious from looking at the OLD site, then the editor will update the link.

The value of a redirect is that automatic processes all over the web know how to handle it. Google, for instance, will automatically move page rank weight to the new site. Robozilla, the ODP's own automated link-checker, automatically flags that site for a high-priority recheck (and presumably, update.)

I know there are times when an automatic update is not possible; I can't imagine any where it's not desirable.
