Hello,

One of my Chinese students raised an interesting question today that I could not answer and wondered if you could help.

She was searching for a Chinese site www.com999.com and found the entry, went to the indicated category http://dmoz.org/World/Chinese_Simplified/地区/亚洲/中国/省份/广东/地区/梅州/商业与经济/ to research any other listed sites and noticed that www.com999.com did not have an entry there (even though the search indicated it should have).

Is such a disparitybetween the search result and the category listing due to link problems?

Thank you for any help,

Chris

That site is not found, so it got removed. [Actually that URL name is no longer owned by anyone]

The search function might be up to a week behind for changes made to listings, but due to major updates in the handling of character sets for all the non-English categories, things are delayed more than normal.

Thank you for the reply

Yes, I see what you mean.

Out of curiosity typically how long must a site be out of action before such things happen?

If a is down for 2 or 3 hours would that be enough for it to trigger deletion from the category or is it more a matter of months?

Also, do such sites get automatically reinserted when they are up again? If so we will need to revisit some of our research.

Thank you,

Chris

ODP automatically finds sites that are down and unreviews them, and editors find them manually and unreview them. There is no set policy as to putting them back in, depends on various factors. Generally I will check the same day, and the next day, and in a week, then put in a holding area for a month, and then delete the site if its still down.

Just to clarify: This only applies to sites with no valid owner. i.e.: Registration run out and was not renewed, so anyone could claim the URL now. Not something that usually happens to well maintained sites.

Sites that are just down are checked by a linkchecker, and usually have to be down for a week or more to be noticed. And after the automated check they are rechecked by hand before they are taken out of the directory. So they would have to be down at least three times in a row when checked over a period of a week or more. So don't worry :)
