Very frustrated at not yet being listed

Hello all,
I do not understand why my site is still not listed. There are not many sites in the category to which I am submitting. Of the sites that are included, my site is a much more valuable and relevant site than most. My traffic is increasing tremendously and the service I provide is very important, as it is a free service that is needed.

I look at some of the sites listed in my category and they are a joke (no offense) in the sense that they do not provide a legitimate service, only trying to make a buck.

I have tried to become an editor, but was turned down because I did not include enough urls. That is only because every site that I can think of (off the top of my head) that is relevant and worthy, is already listed.

What can I do to get listed?

all the best,
Joe

If you've suggested your site to the most appropriate category, you've done all that you can. Some editor will visit the category at some point and process it. We can't predict who or when that will be though, or the result. There's rather more on this subject in this forum's FAQ.

If you can't think of (m)any new sites to add to a particular category, then it's not really a good place for you to become an editor. Editing is all about building the directory. What would you do once you've reviewed the one or two sites that could be added? If you want to become an editor, you should apply for a category where finding sites to list isn't going to be such a problem. How about a hobby or pass-time, perhaps a category related to the place where you live?

Thanks for your reply. It's not that I don't know of the sites to add to a specific category. The problem is they are listed in other categories. Should I submit them?

all the best,
Joe

Only if the other categories are Regional and you're suggesting them to a Topical category, or the reverse, or if they're listed under a different language, or otherwise suitable for multiple listings, per http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#multiple .

Thanks for your reply. I did end up reapplying as an editor and included a couple new sites along with my site. Hopefully, I get a yes.

Well I got a response, and yet another rejection. Here was the response:
While we are always looking for new editors, I am afraid we cannot accept your application at this time due to the fact the sites you submitted are not suitable for the category. Please read the category description or try searching the directory for terms related to the subject you wish to edit to be sure you are looking in the right place. I hope you will re-apply in the near future either with sites suitable for this category or for a category that better suits the links you have suggested.

The sites I submitted were extremely suitable for the category. I feel like I am being blackballed as I have done everything asked of me with no avail.

Out of curiosity, did you check the category description where you were applying? Its possible that the sites you thought were listable in the category, were in fact more suitable elsewhere.

Yes. The category I reapplied to was Arts: Contests (2)

There are only two sites listed in this category. The three sites that I have submitted are extremely suitable in this category. In fact there is no other category that is more suitable. With regards to two of the three sites that I submitted, the only thing that they do is list art contests. I can't possibly see any reason why all three sites were not imediately accepted.

all the best,
Joe

Probably because the category itself seems to exist only to house links out to other topical contest categories:

This category, Arts: Contests, serves as an @link farm for contest categories located throughout the Arts branch.

Applying to be an editor of a category that is not meant to list more than a couple of sites is probably not a good place to start anyway.

OK. Well then I have a couple questions. How did the two sites that got listed in Arts: Contests get listed there? There doesn't seem to be any other topical category that art contests fit into. These are the categories that have contests as subcategories.

Animation@ (1)
Movies@ (15)
Photography@ (43)
Playwriting@ (25)
Songwriting@ (49)
Writers@ (160)

...and what category do you recommend that I apply for if Art: Contests isn't one that is recommended?

all the best,
Joe

I would assume that (like most arts sites) art contests would be listed first by the type of art-form involved. Only once you've got as far as you can with the typ, do you look to see if there is a "contests" sub-category. So the only sites that are appropriate for listing in Arts/Contests are ons that relate to contests that span more than one of the primary divisions used in the Arts/ category. In addition, it's probably not enough for a site to include some form of contest to be listed there, the contest would have to be the main focus of the site. If not, then you'd consider the site for listing under a category for whatever the main focus was. The Arts/ Category Description also contains some good information about the branch.

what category do you recommend that I apply for
That's really up to you. Only you know what interests you have and what you hope to get out of being an editor. Obviously somewhere where you understand the listing criteria and feel you can help improve the directory would be good... (One option is looking for somewhere local to you in Regional/.)

Thanks for the link. I don't think regional will work, but I will read over all of the category descriptions and try to find the best option.

all the best,
Joe
