I submitted a site in March 2006 and it still has not been listed. I am ok with waiting but would like some verification that I'm at least in the queue. I've read threads where people had received confirmation that they were successfully submitted however DMOZ responded that they had no record of it.

I submitted to http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Home_and_Garden/Patio/Furniture/ which has not had an editor in the past year.

Should I try a different category?

Any response is greatly appreciated!

This is asking for status, something we no longer provide.
See Why can't we ask about the status of our site suggestions anymore?

> Should I try a different category?
Certainly not. The DMOZ guidelines ask you to suggest a site ONCE to the ONE best category. If you suggested the first time to the best category any other category would not be the best one.
You may suggest once again to the same category as the first time, this will not harm your site (the only thing that might happen is that the date of suggestion will be ovewritten) if this will make you more certain to know that we have received your suggestion and that it is not lost during the technical problems we had at the end of last year.

ok, thanks for the info. I understand about not providing a status. However, can you tell me the last time a new site was added to the category I submitted to? Another words, have there been any additions in the last year or is the category dead?

You could check that (at least to some extent) yourself in one of two ways.

First, if you have some regularly-spaced (in time) DMOZ RDFs you can (fairly) easily parse them to find the changes. That will give you precise answers.

If you don't, then find a clone or two that lag DMOZ by a few months (the Google Directory is a good one to start with) and eyeball the differences.

These methods will work for any category, so no need to ask editors to look the edits up for you.

That means we have deleted some sites that were either not existing anymore or that did not meet our guidelines anymore.

You can see the last date that the category was updated at the bottom of the category. While that won't tell you precisely when a site was last added (since "update" includes modifying and deleting sites as well as some other maintenance tasks), it will tell you that nothing has been added to the category since at least the date that's showing. Please note, though, that the fact that a category hasn't been updated in a year doesn't make it dead.

Ah yes. Sorry about that. That's an artefact from the outage we had at the end of last year -- for categories that show that, the most you can tell is that they haven't been edited since the servers came back at the end of December.
