Website removed from DMOZ, may I re-submit now?

Dear moderators,

I have been asked by my boss to re-submit our website to the DMOZ directory again after his attempts to re-submit failed. I thought this was a better place to start trying to understand what happened.
Going through older threads I could not find any information on websites having been removed and then not being listed again, I really hope the mod community can help.

Our website <URL removed> (sorry, please feel free to remove but I thought it was important information so you could look into the history of it maybe..?) was first listed in 2004/early 2005 according to my boss. He said he noticed that it had disappeared around 2010 and in 2011 tried to re-submit. Reading between the lines I think he may have submitted to the wrong category, a very top line one despite us being a UK based business:

http://www.dmoz.org/...cessories/Used/

whereas I think the correct category would need to be regional to Europe and the UK like for example the following category:

http://www.dmoz.org/..._Service/Parts/

Now here are my questions - how could an existing listing just be removed and what may have triggered this?

Am I okay to submit again now to the aforementioned sub-category (the second one)?

Thank you for your time looking at this.

Best regards,

Julian

If you believe the website is listable, by all means suggest it to the most appropriate category.

We don't decline misplaced listing suggestions, we move them - but this can double the elapsed time before processing.

We don't decline listing suggestions with badly written titles and descriptions, we rewrite them (as we need to do for the majority).

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestion in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your swift response. What are your thoughts on an existing listing being removed from DMOZ in the past, any suggestions what could have triggered such an event?

I do not want to create more work by submitting again without knowing the reason for which it may have been removed in the first place... hope that makes sense.

Many thanks!

We remove listings for only two reasons.

1. The site is no longer in accord with our Site Selection Criteria.
2. The site is no longer working properly. (All sites have some downtime so we generally allow a few weeks for recovery before removal - which is always an editorial decision.)

Hi Jim,

We are still struggling to come to terms with how our site could have been removed. The site is a genuine webiste helping people to locate spare car parts for their vehicle and is not in breach of any of the guidelines or site selection criteria outlined in the T&Cs.
It is not under construction nor has it stopped working even in the short run.

Because of the nature of how one becomes an editor specialised in a certain category, is it possible that a competitor could reach editor status and then remove our site without his decision being questioned or sense-checked by soneone else?

You can see from a number of third party properties that our website engages with a lot of people who are generally very happy with the service we provide.

<links removed acc. to forum TOS>

Unfortunately we operate in a highly competitive market where I would not put it past some of my competitors to actively try and get us removed from authoritative directories like yours.

Do you think such manipulation is possible or is there a process in place to stop this from happening? Can someone apply to be an editor in an industry he/she has a financial interest in with the view to control visibility in that market?

We have re-submitted our business to the most suitable category now and trust that we will be re-listed in due course. However for the record I am really keen to find out if existing listings can be manipulated and removed with malicious intent.

Many thanks for your time.

Best regards,

Julian

If you suspect abuse please use the Report abuse-function found at the top of the category -page. It is good if you have some solid facts to support your report.

Of course some people try to manipulate our rules and of course we have processes to prevent that.
