Oh, and though I could look at some of your products, I couldn't get the "catalogue" link to work; it wanted to download an .exe on my machine. I tried 3 different browsers.

I think that's because the catalogue is zipped up in an .exe (rather than being viewable online via that link).

If you left click on the link you should be given the choice of viewing the catalogue online or downloading it to your computer.

That's one of the reasons I hate MicroSoft Internet Explorer.

The option "Open this file from its current location" doesn't mean 'run the file on the machine the website is running on', it means 'download the file and run it on my machine'. I'm sure many people believe that by clicking that option they are running the file on someone else's machine and hence protecting themselves from dangerous software.

My browser (Mozilla) is slightly more security concious, and it won't give me the option of just running it. I know that I would never run an executable from a site I didn't know. I wonder how many of your customers will be happy to do so. Another thing to think about is that only people running Microsoft Windows will be able to use that executable, should they choose to download it.

In this case, none of the above will affect your site's suitability for listing, since you already appear to have sufficient content for that area.

Having read you comments, I think I might well remove that link from my site as all the information in the downloadable catalogue is listed on the site.

Well since you've already gone to the trouble of producing the file, uploading it, and making it available, you might as well leave it there. What you could do is to change that download page to read something like:

All of our products can be seen online by clicking the 'products' button on the left hand side of your screen, however if you wish to download our catalogue and view it offline, click here.


That would alert users to the fact that they don't *need* to download the file, but they can if they choose to. Of course, I'm assuming that the entire catalogue *is* available online. <img src="/images/icons/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Just a sidenote: If you want to supply a downloadable catalogue, then a non-.exe ZIP file should be fine. Inside the ZIP file should be either an HTML version of the catalogue, Rich Text Format, or you could supply it as a PDF file. For a global audience it is best to avoid stuff that is machine specific. The choice is yours. This in no way affects your listing at the ODP.

True. (Our only business is to mention what kind of data it is, so people without the capacity or desire for that kind of data know to not visit the site.)
