The role of volunteer administrator (not the same thing as a Resource-Zone forum administrator) is explained here: http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/admin/ (but note that the list at the bottom is not current).
The only paid people are AOL staff, who rarely get involved with editing or managing the directory.
