Long Time DMOZ User First Time Poster

Just want to say hi to you all :D I been thinking about it and I was wondering if you guys have a statistic to say how many categories have editors these days?

I ask this because I remember back in the day, around 2000 I guess it used to be tricky to find a vacant category now I can’t find one with an editor…

Regards,
Joe

No, such a statistic does not exist. Reasons:

  • No editor "owns" a category. Several editors can be active in the same category. So we advice people not to look for categories with/without editors. If you wantsto become an editor, you should look for categories you have an interest in. Categories you see a need to fill with sites.
  • If an editor is listed in one category, he can edit all categories below tha, withoput being explicitly listed. So having no editor name underneath does not mean a category is neglected.

As a conclusion, we feel that the "number of categhories with a designated editor" is not a usefull number to know.

You could take the total number of categories and divide by the total number of editors. That would give the 'average' number of categories that each editor would have to look after, if they divided them up equally. But since it doesn't happen like that (many newer editors have permissions in only a handfull of categories, while 200-ish 'editalls' can edit anywhere) so that number would be pretty meaningless too.

I don't think there's ever been a time when that was true, not even back in 2000.

Thanks for Replys

I’m not going to try arguing any points, because I know the deal / agenda that DMOZ now has. Being an editor, better yet a senior editor has career making benefit in the web industry today. And there is nothing I can do to stop or join it….

Have a good day :D

I'm sure that is true. After all, I read it on the Internet.

Actually, similar numbers are on the front page of the public site.

They are misleading in that the numbers of editors should read: Number of personal who at one time or antoher have edited here.

The number of active editors (those with active logins) is less than a tenth of that number.

You can always count the number of editors yourself, in 26 easy steps:
http://www.dmoz.org/Bookmarks/

I would guess that you'll find the total is actually somewhere nearer 80,000 by now -- AFAIK those numbers on the front page haven't been updated in a while.

Of course that figure is the total number of people who have ever been editors. The number of currently active editors is much smaller, around 5,600 last time I looked. (You can see the list at http://www.dmoz.org/edoc/editorlist.txt -- but some of the names are duplicated for some reason, so it's not as easy as counting the lines.)

I think that every editor would like to see a larger number there -- but only if that larger number represented quality editors who are committed to helping the directory grow.
