What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to?

I'm just finishing a site for a client that has a 30 square mile ranch in New Mexico (http://www.pearson-ranch.com). He offers lodging for horseback riding vacations and corporate team building (during off-hunting seasons). During hunting season - he offers guided hunts for various game animals- large and small. He also has a shopping cart setup to sell elk meats (jerky, steak, hamburg, and sausage). What would I be allowed to submit to? It seems like these 3 areas are unique enough to submit to all three?

For hunting, I would choose:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Recreation/Outdoors/Hunting/Game/?il=1

For horseback riding vacations, I would choose:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Sports/Equestrian/Vacations_and_Touring/Directories/?il=1

For Elk meats shopping, I would choose:
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Food/Meat/Exotic/
or
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Food/Meat/Jerky/

For regional listings I would choose...
For ranch (horseback riding) info:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/

for hunting:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Recreation_and_Sports/?il=1

for shopping:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/

I don't want to spam Open Directory - but each one of these areas is unique and offers specifiic services for people searching for them. Please advise...

No. Notice that the listings there, AREN'T websites for single hunting venues.

>For horseback riding vacations, I would choose:
http:/dmoz.org/Sports/Equestrian/Vacations_and_Touring/Directories/
No, it's a "Ranch", not a "Directory". (The ODP is a directory.)

For Elk meats shopping, I would choose:
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Food/Meat/Exotic/
or
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Food/Meat/Jerky/
Not all the meat is Jerky? All of it _IS_ Exotic. That's the first half of the question. (But see below.)

For regional listings I would choose...
For ranch (horseback riding) info:
http://dmoz.or/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/
Between this one and the next, this is clearly more specific, and more descriptive of the overall contents of the site -- "Lodging/Ranch" implies a particular _kind_ of outdoor activity, and the description could mention "Offers elk hunting, ..."

for hunting:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Recreation_and_Sports/
>The prior category is in every way better than this one -- more specific and a better match.

for shopping:
http://directory.google.com/Top/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/
Compare to the Shopping categories above. The question is, does the ranch ship only to New Mexico, or does it ship to multiple states. If NM-only, then list here only. If it ships outside NM, then list in top-level Shopping (Exotic) only.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

So...if I understand you correctly (had to read this a couple of times...phew!) your recommendation would be to submit to 2 categories:

for shopping:
http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Food/Meat/Exotic/
(yes..my client sells his products world wide through an online shopping cart. The description would list the various elk products: elk jerky, steaks, sausage and hamburg)

for general ranch stuff:
http://dmoz.or/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/
(with a description for various hunting events, horseback riding vacations, and corporate team building)

Question: Do I submit the home page for both categories (www.pearson-ranch.com)? Or do I have to direct the editor to one of the products pages for the shopping?

You could submit either. The editor might change either way, depending on which was considered easier on our users.

There are a couple of reasons for preferring the main URL whenever possible -- you never know when someone will take it upon himself to completely redesign the site.

On this site, both kinds of content seem easy to find from the home page, so I'd just list (and submit) the home page in both category.

Also, you might submit it to the most geographically-specific category possible. That is typically a town or county category.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

The ranch is located in Mangus Mountains - Horse Springs, which is about 3+ hours south of Rio Rancho. Rio Rancho is used for the mailing address only. Mangus Mountains or Horse Springs isn't listed as a regional town/city. The ranch encompasses 10 square miles (approximately 9,000 acres)and adjoins the the Gila/Apache National Forest(another 30 square miles used for activities) - probably IS the town/city plus a few more.

There's another ranch down in this general area -http://www.doubleeranch.com/. The Double E Ranch offers everything that Pearson Ranch offers and is listed under:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/

I was planning on going one level down to:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/

where there are several other LARGE ranches (that probably don't fit a particular town either) in the state listed.

So now what should I do?

If the ranch is straddling the borders of localities and/or somehow exists outside of a locality it can be bumped up to the county category, which in this case appears to be Catron County.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

I've been waiting for a response from the Ranch owner as to the exact location of the ranch. His response was that it's located in the Mangus Mountains - and the closest town is Horse Springs. He did say that the entire ranch is in Catron County and adjoins the Gila/Apache National Forest.

I'm still confused, however, because if I go to the most specific region possible (Catron County as recommended), I would be submitting to the following category:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Counties/Catron/

There is one listing in this category and it's the Catron County profile. A county profile seems appropriate for this category. Adding Pearson Ranch to this category seems "out of place".

Could you explain why I'd submit to:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Counties/Catron/
versus:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/

where other New Mexico guest ranches offering similar services/activities are listed?

Just trying to understand the logic behind selecting the best category...

http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/

This wasn't a "rather than" but an "in addition to, and the logic works like this:

Generally, a site may be reviewed for a possible regional focus (and therefore regional listing) AND a possible topical focus (and therefore a topical listing.) e.g. General Motors, headquartered in Flint, Michigan.

Some kinds of entities have a topical focus, but only in a very small geographic locus. If there are too many of them, including at least one in almost any community, then we just don't list them at all in topical: elementary schools, real estate agents, hairdressers, etc.

Some kinds of entities have a local focus, but are rare or unique enough to draw people from a wider geographical region to that locus, simply to make physical contact with that entity: National Parks, Symphony orchestras, Art Museums, Zen or Mormon Temples, Theme Parks, Show Caves. These entities might be included in Topical categories broken down by region, or in major Regional categories broken down by topic. Wherever the category happened to have been created, it could be logically be considered a "topical" category; and therefore a listing in it wouldn't overlap with a listing in "Regional" that represented a VERY specific local focus.
The question is: does the ranch website have information uniquely of interest to residents of the county (or nearest town): perhaps employment opportunities, special services geared to local residents or groups, etc.

Single location accommodations should not be listed at the state level. Sites inappropriately listed at the state level will need to be moved down to more specific categories.

Accommodations are not listed twice in Regional.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

It is rumoured that there was a hardware failure in the server.

Use the mirror at http://ch.dmoz.org for a (usually) one day old version of the ODP (at the moment it is three days old, but there has been no editing for 2 days, so it is still one day behind!); or browse http://directory.google.com/ for a copy that is updated about once per month.

You might have to wait a day or two for an answer.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

From what I recall - all the ranches listed in:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/Ranches/ are single accomodation ranches.
That's what Marisa was talking about, that rather than your site belonging at the state level where the others, the ones currently listed at the state most likely belong at the county or locality level and that someone will have to move those that need to be moved. It isn't an immediate thing, especially with the server down, but it will be done eventually. In the meantime, I'd submit the site to the county category marisa pointed out once the server is back up.

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

After 4 1/2 long months, my client's site has been listed! Unfortunately, in a totally incorrect category...

After waiting 3 months - I forwarded a link of this forum posting to the editor (at that time) of:
http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Counties/Catron/

where I applied (per recommended by this forum), in hopes to expedite the listing. I don't understand how this site got placed where it did - listed by contact mailing address and not by ranch location (about 180 miles apart). Maps and ranch directions have been part of the site since it's been in production.

See new listing at:
http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/New_Mexico/Localities/R/Rio_Rancho/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/

I still haven't heard anything on my submission for exotic meats. Can someone give me the status of that request? Also - what should I do about this incorrect listing? Thanks in advance for your help...

Re: What to submit http://www.pearson-ranch.com to

Go to the category where www.pearson-ranch.com is located and use the Update Url link at the top of the page. Include a note as to what your reason is for moving the site and possibly reference this thread. You might consider adding the ranch's physical address to your web site's homepage.

The next step is to use this Submission Status forum to check on the status of your Update Url. Please be sure to read this important information first.

Use the above mentioned forum to do a status check on your exotic meats.
