Why let new editors even apply for catergories that are too large? The application process should be 2 steps:

1st step:
ask if the person applying for the category is new, and cross reference with the size of the category.

2nd step:
if step 1 is satisfied, then ask those marathon questions.

no?

Because some categories that are too large for a new editor are not complete. Is Montreal business too big for a new editor? Yes. Does it have every business web site in Montreal? Probably not. Does it have every kind of business categorized? No.

Maybe a different example will be easier to understand. Authors whose names begin with C. Way too big for a new editor. Does every author whose name begins with the letter C have a category? I doubt it. Next year, a best-selling book could be by an author no one has heard of right now.

If we leave categories like these open for applications, people can point out what we are missing. "Hey, you don't have a category for that new French film that's playing at the art houses. Here, I have found three reviews of it."

The notices telling people that a category needs an editor or asking them to volunteer are also a prompt for existing editors. And they may have the required experience. If an existing editor does not already have editing rights for a category, they can only see the same page as a non-editor. <img src="/images/icons/cool.gif" alt="" />
