When a site URL doesn't work...

Should I send the error to the editor of the category or post it here. I do a lot of searching on DMOZ and have run into quite a few.

Best way is to use the "Update listing" link in the category. That way it goes into a pile that any editor with permissions there can deal with.

An alternate way is to post them in the Report Hijacks, Dead Links & Inappropriate ODP Content Here ONLY thread in the Abuse Reporting forum.

Either way, we are always appreciative of such reports. Quality control is very important to us.
