Hello everyone! I hope I'm not being an idiot here? But, when i search DMOZ for wedding cake uk, wedding cakes uk, wedding cake london or wedding cakes london i don't appear in the results.

My wedding cake company is one of five or six of the top cake companies in London, i don't understand why we don't appear. Also, does anyone know why we appear in event planning and not a wedding cakes section.

Our site is located at [url removed]

Thank you
May
:)

There's no "Wedding Cakes" section. There are just "Food and related products" or "Event planning". The editor has to judge which is the best fit for any particular business website.

You can always suggest that a site be moved to another category. In a case like this, where the two categories are "close together" (under the same locality parent category), almost surely the same editor could remove it from one, and add it to the other, in a single operation: and that's probably what would happen (if, of course, they thought the suggestion was a good one.)

As for the search, if any of your search terms aren't in the website title or description, you won't see that site directly. (It may still appear indirectly, in one of the categories in the search results--which is the ideal way to find it, this being a directory and all.)

Thus, rather than searching for "Wedding cakes UK", the _directory_ way would be to go to the Regional/Europe/United Kingdom" category, and search _just in that category_ for "wedding cakes".

We aren't a search engine; we're a directory. We do have a search facility but it's mainly intended for finding appropriate categories, not actual websites.

Despite that, can check if your site is listed by using our search for domain.tld without any http or www prefixes (eg google.com).

Caveat: Our search works from a database that can be a few weeks out of date, not the live directory.

Still a little confused?

Hello again, Firstly sorry for posting my URL in the initial message, it won't happen again. Ok...when i search the directory for wedding cakes...using my logic i go this way Top: Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Shopping: Weddings: Cakes

There is a single wedding cake company that appears in this section. Why do they appear here and not in their locality category.

Surely all UK companies that sell wedding cakes should appear in the category Top: Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Shopping: Weddings: Cakes. If i navigated there having used DMOZ for the first time i would presume that you only have a single wedding cake company listed in the directory for the whole of the UK.

If you navigate to this category Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Event Planning: Weddings.....there isn't a wedding cakes category at all. So one would presume that you have no wedding cake companies listed.

If you got to Regional: Europe: United Kingdom: Business and Economy: Shopping: Food: Baked Goods there are many cake companies but as a directory user i may not go to this category for a wedding cake.

Basically there are cake companies scattered all over the directory in different categories some you will see, some you won't. How is this useful to a directory user?

Can you see my confusion.

To be listed in a UK level Shopping category, a website must sell direct to the consumer and include a priced catalogue and a means of placing an order remotely for local delivery.

We apparently only know of one wedding cake website that meets those requirements.

<added> ... and that would seem to have been listed there in error :( </added>
<added> ... now corrected :) </added>

Confusion can often be dispelled by reading a category's description if there is one. In this case there is. There's a link to it towards the top right of the category page :).

category description said:
Only submit here if you are based in the UK, offer delivery within the entire UK and your site contains a catalogue, prices and ordering instructions.

If it doesn't and you are a shop or home based business, please submit to your locality.

Failure to comply is likely to cause lengthy delays.
(No, I didn't just put it there.)
