Hello,

We have been requesting for a very long time to have our site moved out of the current category we are listed in. For some reason we have been placed in this local area category and cannot seem to get away from it. The category in question is:
Regional: North America: Canada: Ontario: Localities: M: Markham: Business and Economy: Services.

The category we feel that we truly belong in is:
Business: Publishing and Printing: Printing: Resources

The website that is we are inquiring about is <url removed>

We have been making this request for quite sometime now and can't understand why there doesn't seem to be any change or response to this request.

Can someone please help us change the category we are placed in?

Thank you

Elan

Based solely on your post (without researching the site or category).
Businesses that have a physical presence in Markham are listed in that category. This is a listing within the Regional branch of the directory, which categorises sites based primarily on their location.

A second listing in the Business branch (where the topic of the site is the primary determinant) may be appropriate as well as the Regional listing, but we generally would not delete a site from Regional to move it to Topical (Business) unless the business no longer had a physical presence for a Regional categorisation.

Try suggesting your site once to the Business category, where it may be listed as well (provided it meets the Business guidelines). The fact it is already listed in Regional should not affect whether the site is listed in Business, but the suggestion will still wait for someone with permissions and an interest in the category to be reviewed and posssibly listed there. This may take months or even years- I could sugar coat it, but that's the reality of the editing system and the number of editors available to deal with 600,000 categories.

I have just listed the site for you to review. We do not work out of the local area we have been placed in nor did we ever. and we do not have a physical presence or regional categorization We are not wanting to have our listing deleted from the local listings but to be also added to the business listing. We feel that this is becuase one of the editors for this category maybe one of our competitors and will not want to update out listing for selfish reasons. We feel that the users of DMOZ would be better benefitted if we were placed in the proper category

what do you mean?

what URL are you talking about. I have read other posts and seen that other people were encouraged to leave their url. I think you are thinking that I have given you the url to someone else's website. the url in the first post I made is the url to my site. the site that is having the problems

The ONLY place on these forums that URL's are accepted are in the Report Hijacks, Dead Links, Inappropriate ODP Content, and other issues here ONLY thread. Links to your own site are not acceptable.

Please forgive me, I really dont mean to argue with you on this but why have these people been able to add their url. and i dont see and mention to them breaking the rules. Infact this post that I have listed, pretty much tells the person that maybe they will be considered faster, now that they have made this post

Your example post was back in 2004 - before we changed the ToS on 21st May 2005 - and it most certainly did not state that priority would be given to an update request as a result of posting here.

Please take note of this forum's subtitle which says Forum for discussions about the process of suggesting a site for inclusion. General discussion only, no mention of specific sites here please.

Editors can only edit in categories where they have permissions and so most can't simply move a listing from a locality to Topical category and publish it there. Instead, they'd send a copy for further evaluation at the destination - effectively the same thing as you suggesting it to there from the outside. The original locality listing would remain intact. gimmster has already said similar things to you but you seem not to have noticed.

We do not work out of the local area we have been placed in nor did we ever. and we do not have a physical presence or regional categorization.
Thanks for telling us that your website has no locality specific relevance. We apologise for our listing error which has now been corrected.

I've removed your website from the locality category where, as you say, it has no relevance.

As regards a Topical listing, I imagine that you've already done as gimmster advised in item 2. Some editor will volunteer to process it there in time but we can't predict who or when that might be - or the result.

Does this mean I am no longer listed in DMOZ? I would also like to say thank you for taking the time to answer all my questions

isnt this going to affect my SERP results now that I am not going to be listed on DMOZ. To be honest with you and with all due respect, I never requested to have my site deleted from DMOZ. I only requested to find out why I was not be considered for a topical category rather then the local category.

SERP results are based on what can be found on your site noy on one link to your site.

Correct, you asked for a move from Regional to a Topical category. You provided enough evidence for us to honour this request. Such a move normaly results in a new review of the site in the new category and maybe a rewritten description. A review will take time. When it will happen we don't know.

Ok, that all sounds good to me.

Thank you to all that have helped me with this post. I really appreciate the fact that you all were trying to figure out my problem. Please accept my apoligies for putting my URL in one of these prior posts. It was my fault for not reading the rules more clearly.
