Why is ... url remove... not accepted on dmoz.

It doesn't make sense why [URL removed] is not listed on dmoz.org [URL removed] has been online since 2007, and is one of the most successful hostels & budget accommodation booking websites online. We have submitted on many occasions over the years and still nothing happens, followed the guide lines to the letter but still no success. You see most of our competitors listed even ones that are not as old or as big as [URL removed]

Well the question is, if smaller sites with very few contents are listed on dmoz what stops a website with lots of unique content and traffic, making it into dmoz.

Is it some kind of conspiracy? or have we just been overlooked?

The reason your site hasn't been listed yet is probably because you've submitted it numerous times..Each time you submit your site it overwrites the previous submission, and puts it at the back of the queue...Your best bet now is to wait for an editor to review it, and not resubmit.

Just to point out that Twhite is not a senior editor and does not have access to your site's submission history. I suggest that you ignore his comments.

Thanks for your input Jim, I've been waiting to gain an insight why my site, which is quite a successful site, has not been listed on dmoz

Like I mentioned the site has been online since 2007, I definately know we have followed all the guidelines, but the problem is one doesn't know how long it takes to review this submissions, or if we were discarded outright by Dmoz.

Maybe we are missing something we are not aware of, I know some people say it doesn't matter if your listed on Dmoz or not, but I think it matters

ODP is a volunteer organisation building a directory as a hobby. Editors edit where they wish, when they wish and as much as they wish within the constraints of their permissions. We have no schedules or systems to force people to do work that they don't volunteer to do. ODP is not primarily a free listing service for website owners and it does not attempt to process their listing suggestions within the time scales desired by them.

Some volunteer will process your listing suggestions in time but we can't predict who or when that might be. Elapsed times can range from a few days to a few years. There is no need to re-suggest your website and doing so could be counter-productive because a later suggestion overwrites any earlier one.

Your waiting will accomplish anything as we do not provide such an insight.

A review takes normaly a few minutes, sometimes a little longer.
But the time between suggestion and review is unknown. It can be a day, a week, a month, a year, or even longer. We do not know.

It is very easy.
After a site has been suggested there are a few possible states
1. the site is listed - you can check yourself, no need to suggest the site again
2. the site is rejected - read the guidelines and you can know which types of sites will be rejected, no need to suggest the site again
3. the site is still waiting review - if not listed and not rejected it must be waiting, no need to suggest the site again

I think dmoz should either be relevant or not relevant.
does it take 1 or 7 years to be reviewed?
I see you pointed out, that how long the site has been online is not relevant to dmoz, a year, or 7 years doesn't matter to dmoz also, what is the point of dmoz? when one waits for such a long time, your forced to resubmit again, to make sure that your not over looked.

So called volunteers either they are doing something or they should get out of volonteering.

You said there are 3 possible states, if your listed you can see, but if your rejeted or still waiting to be reviewed how do you know.

Or is this just hide and seek

I'm not saying fewer editors will be better.

I think there is a lot of grand standing going on in dmoz, its like a show off, taking time just for the sake of it.

Dmoz is human edited, but if there is no partiular struture to how the editors should do there job, then whats the point in having them?

For a site to wait for years to be reviewed its pretty poor in this internet age, companies go to market in that amount of time

And it is. It is just a question of relevant to who. DMOZ is not a tool to promote websites. So if that is what you are looking fro than DMOZ will be not relevant for you. But it still is relevant for many other people.

Yes sometimes it does.

No, you are not forced to do so. Once a site is suggested it will stay in the pool of suggested sites until it is reviewed.

They are doing something. That this something is not the thing you want them to do is probably based on the fact that you (and othjer webmasters) want them to do things they are not volunteering for.

I already told you that if you read the guidelines you can know which types of websites will be rejectd. If your site is not of such type and if it also is not listed yet than there can only be one conclusion: it must be still waiting review.

The only structure we have is "Editors do as much work as they want and in the categories they want" Editors are not forced to spend a minimum amount of time (although for security reasons we will inactivate an account if an editor has done no edits in 4 months, they always can request to be reactivated again) and neither are they forced to work on subjects (categories) thet are not interested in.

Well a company that goes to market has shown to be relevant for their users and has a much higher chance of being listed. On the other hand many companies will go broke in a year, reviewing and listing their websites could be seen as a waste of precious editor time. And still we review, list and remove such websites as we can not predict which websites/companies will be succesfull. We only know one thing for sure: A DMOZ listing will have no influence on a company/website being succesfull or not.

Grandstanding indeed.

What we have here is a guy who has misunderstood our purpose and modus operandi, despite several polite and factual explanations, and persists in continuing to irrationally malign our much abused editors.

It's very clear that we're never going to agree so closing.
