Will I ever get in

My site has been online since 1999, I would say its quite large forum that discusses everything from entertainment, science, news, technology.

I have been trying to get my site listed for over 5 years now with my current domain, I even re-applied yesterday as the last time I applied was almost a year ago.

I will be honest you will probably black list me but I would rather someone tell me what is wrong with my site because I look at the category that I think is best suited for my niche and see some of my rivals that have much less information and members than me, I also see sites that I believe do not belong in there but year after year I get overlooked.

I know the Editors are not paid and they do a fantastic job, but why does yahoo have me in there directory - unpaid. but I cannot get into dmoz with a site that has been online for for longer than facebook, ebay, and many other well known sites.

What am I doing wrong

We don't know whet website you're talking about (thanks for following the forum T&C) and we wouldn't comment here even if we did.

If your website is listable, it'll probably be listed in time - but we can't predict when that might be.

Thanks for the reply Jim, I was feeling a little left out yesterday.

I appreciate your time, I guess now I have messed up the queue that my site was already in.

I would never break any terms and conditions I read the stickies before posting this.

Must be an other directory you are talking about.
DMOZ has no option which you can use to try to get your website listed.
You mght have misunderstood the goal of DMOZ and the suggestion option we provide.
Please do a search on this forum and you will find many explanations by DMOZ editors.

I've submitted sites previously with no problem. However I submitted 4 sites in April of this year (6mths) and have had no further info and still no listing. What does perturb me is that thinking there might be a shortage of editors I applied to offer my services and was rejected within 24hrs.

This troubles me as I'm starting to suspect that categories are being hijacked by particular companies who then ignore all further applications for listings. One thing is for sure, DMOZ is not the same standard as when I first used it and I'm now beginning to question whether it has any future. A shame really as it was always somewhere the little guy could get a fair crack against the big boys.

I'm in the same boat DigitalWorld... and it seems to be sinking fast. I'd registered other sites with DMOZ years ago and it was fine but now I can't seem to get my new business on the directory.

From what I understand the editors have a tough task and the demand far outweighs the supply. As I have a genuine marketing consultancy company I would pay to get my listing reviewed and fed back if there is a problem - for all I know it's been rejected and I'm typing here like a chump waiting to here back...

Anywho, fingers crossed it gets looked at soon!

You all seem to think that DMOZ is some sort of service to list websites.
Well, it isn't.
You can not list, register (or what you might call it) your website with DMOZ. You can not even ask editors to list your website.
The only thing you can do is suggest a website (that does not need to be yours) for which you believe that it might be usefull for the DMOZ users.
The only thing DMOZ promises is that an editor will look at that suggestion.
We do not promise when that will be. Can be in a few days (exception) but can also be after a few years (also and exception).
We also do not promise that we will list all suggested websites. Only those websites that meet our guidelines and that add value to a category will be listed.
We also do look for listable websites ourself in other sources, we are not dependend on the pool of suggested websites.

Which all adds up to DMOZ (sponsored by AOL who seem to rely solely on its content for search listings) becoming pointless?

I live and breath open source, this all smacks of elitism and that is why unless someone wakes up and joins the Internet of the 21st century DMOZ will lose any relevance whatsoever and simply die.

"Open" in reference to the directory does not refer to anyone being able to list a site, or to get listed in the directory. Rather, it refers to the free use of content. See the licensing information.
