How many editors are covering that particular category - is this something I could volunteer for?

No, you can browse the category or return here in six months for a status check. We simply do not do notifications.

More than 200 editors have permission to edit in any given category.

We are always looking for volunteers, but that category is too large for a new editor. Should you apply, consider one of the virus-specific subcategories.

Would it be in my best interest to submit to an alternative, less busy and more actively edited category? Can I resubmit if I already have a submission in the queue?

It would not be in your best interest, unless possibly the new category is more appropriate than the one you submitted it to. You can resubmit, but you may not, except possibly to a Regional category, or a new category you now consider the best possible in the directory.

I believe it now would best match the "Computers: Security: Malicious Software" category. 6 months ago I mostly focused on viruses, but the site has matured to a point that includes all malware (viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.) and it would not longer fit in just the specific "...Malicious Software: Viruses" category.

How do I proceed with a resubmission if I already have a pending submission?

IMHO, considering I don't edit in that category -- let it go. The reviewing editor is likely to move it him/her/self. If it ends up listed in the Viruses category, and you want to move it, submit an "Update" request.
