www.evacaville.com

Oh also... I made a mistake its the Sites using odp/E instead of sites using odp/V sorry about the mistake.

It has no original content - just ODP results, news from a service, and a very few links.

This makes "Sites Using ODP results" the only category it is eligible for.

...And since the category editor owns that domain, you already have access to that information, eh?

Directories based off ODP data technically do not offer unique content to ODP and they typically are not listed anywhere in the directory other than the Sites Using ODP Data category.

<added - vmcknight types faster than I!>

I WAS the odp editor for it until my account was deleted.

As for unique content, your somewhat correct, but other sites such as officialcitysites.org don't have much content either.

Thats one of the biggest problems facing the ODP – subjectivity! One site will get in and another will be excluded – is that fair? No! Can this practice and the number of instances like this be reduced? Yes!

The submission process needs to be fair for each and every submitter.

Perhaps your problem is that you want your site to be spidered instead of edited. Sorry, that's not what the ODP is about. Submit to a search engine.

As for the issue of sites using ODP data, the policies are clear and are uniformly applied. If a site simply presents properly attributed ODP data, it is classified as a site using ODP data. If it doesn't display proper attribution, it is not listed. Not particularly complicated.

Wayfarer - yes, ideally, the submission process should be fair for all sites. But unfortunately this is reality, and the following factors prevent us from doing this:

1. Not all categories are as popular as others, so some are under-edited and therefore have large backlogs.

2. Some submitters are better at taking advantage of us than others - they are able to sneek in deeplinks or mirrors without us noticing. Of course, we do try to kill as many of these as possible, but because different editors view different sites, that's not always possible. And in this case, it's a few submitters spoiling it for everyone else - if it weren't for the anti-spam checks we had to do, sites would probably be listed quicker.

3. We're volunteers. We edit when we want to, not when we have to. We don't get paid for what we do - if we don't feel like tackling a large queue of submissions, we don't have to.

The fact is that some areas of the directory are brilliant, and some aren't - it just happens that often the better parts are the non-commercial 'hobby' categories and the not-so-good categories are the commercial ones.

No, I just want my web site placed in the correct category.

It's called human opinion and subjectivity, I believe. /images/icons/wink.gif

I'd list sites and do thing a lot of editors wouldn't. A lot of editors list sites and do thing I wouldn't. That's life, and that's human nature.

>>No, I just want my web site placed in the correct category.<<

The problem is that your definition of "the correct category" does not agree with ODP's definition. I realize that Vacaville is your target audience, but the ODP policy for listing directories which use ODP data and provide little to no additional unique content is to list them in the category that you are listed in.

>>but other sites such as officialcitysites.org don't have much content either<<

First, we evaluate sites on their own merit, not relative to other sites. Second, I have no idea why you would pick this site to compare to yours - it is far larger and contains a lot more information than just the ODP data. Third, in the few places that it is listed, you can tell from the definition that the reason it is listed is for the comprehensive list of localities (a hard commodity to find). However, it is not listed under "sites using ODP data", which it should be, and there are two deeplinks to localities which are inappropriate. Hopefully an editall/meta will fix this shortly.

wayfarer seems to have missed the point that the site in question IS listed.

It's beginning to sound to me like ohboydmoz has an editor login. If he does, he should know how ODP works better than he actually seems to. I'm starting to get confused...

Agreed. By the way, are the unreviewed stats available to those who use the directory on their own sites?
