I have found the same type of directory I think. Its called zeal. Is it just as affective as DMOZ or what are the bennifits. Any answers would greatly be appreciated.
There are similarities between Zeal and Dmoz. Both are maintained by volunteers. (In fact some people are editors in both places.)
But there are differences. Zeal editors only list non-commercial sites. Those listings are free. Zeal is owned by Looksmart, which employs editors to list commercial sites for a fee.
The Open Directory data can be copied freely by anyone who follows the terms of the license. So there are hundreds of Dmoz clones. Looksmart does not allow free copying of the Zeal/Looksmart directory.
A good example would be the Google Directory. But you can't submit a site to the Google Directory. The 'submit' form there will bring you to the Open Directory.
Some other Open Directory copies accept paid listings. They are added to the directory copied from us. Obviously those paid listings will only appear on the site that takes the money for them. They don't appear on Dmoz itself.
