I was wondering:

What is the average number of personal homepage submitted daily? How long does it generally take for them to be reviewed?

Thanks!

Personal Homepages is an atypical category (well, they're all atypical, but this fits oddly contrasting types.)

For one thing, even if 90% of everything is junk, PH is less non-junky than most things: garish colors fight with wierd fonts, cryptic semi-HTML, and badly-composed, badly scanned photographs for attention. Many people -- and many editors including me -- wouldn't be caught dead in there. Even with very modest content standards, many submittals don't get accepted.

But at the same time, there are interesting people with personal pages: there are pages with truly substantial unique content (by any standard) and we have editors who genuinely enjoy poring over the slush pile and picking out the gems.

The 'average time to listing' is a very meaningless value. I listed one (mis-submitted!) site yesterday within a couple of hours -- and I believe (based on a large and representative sample) that a good 5-10% of sites get listed within a day or so. On the other hand, there are spam-ridden or taxonomically-troublesome categories where sites may sit for years. You'd have a better chance predicting where a tornado will strike next. But I think the Personal Pages category is near tornado alley.

MsDetta, how long has it been since you submitted the site? Please provide the url and the name of the category to which you submitted the site. One of us can then verify if it is indeed in the queue waiting to be listed. If it is not in the queue, we can then let you know to re-submit.

I hope this helps. <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

I only submitted it on September 24, 2002. After reading some of the posts on the forums, I was curious to know how long it normally takes because I do realize there are a lot of submissions.

The site is:

http://www.geoities.com/dian_hildebrandt/index.html

The category was:

http://dmoz.org/Society/People/Personal_Homepages/H/

Thanks for your help! <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

Submission is untouched by an editor and assumed to be still in the queue. Ask back here, or email the category editor, in a few months if you see no change. These categories receive a massive amount of submissions most of which use mangled HTML or are spam.

Your site META Title returns: >>MegaGo.com - ONE CLICK SEARCH !<< rather than something more useful, and has no META description: Not required to be listed, but some Search Engines use that data in the returned search results when they list your site. Also not required, but giving my browser a hard time: Validation Results.

<later>Ah, using my other browser I can now see why the returned Title is MegaGo; your site at http://www.geoities.com/dian_hildebrandt/index.html simply redirects to http://www.MegaGo.com/l/? , which would be listed instead of the geocities URL if it qualified. However, it isn't going to be listed, as it doesn't qualify: it is just a long list of affiliate links, not a personal page at all.</later>

Giz,

Thanks for your quick reply. I just double checked the Meta's on my site, and here's my Metas:

{<meta name="keywords" content="web design, graphic design, Hammond IN job seeker, cribbage, books, music, Open Project Directory search engine."]

[<meta name=description" content="My personal homepage with links to websites I've designed and graphics I've made, and it also contains my biography and resume. My interests page contains links to cribbage, book, and music websites.]

[<meta name="Author" content=""Diane Hildebrandt"">]

[<title>Detta's World</title>]

Should my title be a Meta title?

Thanks again for your help! <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

Ah, I see the problem - have another look at the URL you posted MsDetta:

http://www.geoities.com/dian_hildebrandt/index.html

MegaGo have obviously brought the missing spelling Geoities (no _c_) and when giz checked the URL you posted, he was taken to the MegaGo site.

I cannot see the proper URL of http://www.geocities.com/dian_hildebrandt/ sitting in the queue for http://dmoz.org/Society/People/Personal_Homepages/H/ (I blame HAL or Dave myself). You may need to resubmit (avoid adding the index.html section of the URL though as it isn't necessary).

Heh, first time a spam address has wasted a submitters time! No problem, glad someone was more awake, and spotted your typing error.

[Not required to be listed: There are a few Errors on your site, that if corrected would enhance the visitors access to your site - ignore the errors attributed to 'bgsound' as that is a non-standard HTML extension, but all the other errors are easy to fix. Send a PM if you want some direct help with that].

Beebware and Giz,

Thanks for your help. Giz, I saved the "errors" page and will quickly fix the errors. I guess I should not count on either FrontPage or Dreamweaver to find these types of errors and have bookmarked this site for future use. Thanks a million! <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
