Guest Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Say, starting from step one (submitted my application today and waiting to hear about it), how do we become a meta editor eventually? <img src="/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />
beebware Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Hard hard work. Good editing, good communication (within the forum, editor notes on sites and via email), earning respect from other editors etc etc.
Guest Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Sounds like a lot, but do-able. Let's see if a year or two might do it <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
totalxsive Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 This official document has more information: http://dmoz.org/erz/editors/editor-types.html#meta .
jimnoble Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Wisdom and the ability to walk on water are also useful <img src="/images/icons/laugh.gif" alt="" />. [Edit: and please note the way that we were all poised to answer within minutes]
foetusized Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 Took me about one year to become an editall and another year to become a meta, but your milage may vary. It is a slightly-well-known paradox that those who strive to become a meta for personal glory rarely achieve the position; it is only by becoming one with the directory and working selflessly to improve it that one can optain meta status -- Foe
Meta enarra Posted October 4, 2002 Meta Posted October 4, 2002 Two words: selfless dedication. Sounds kinda grand but that's really what it boils down to. You want to see the directory grow and improve and are dedicated to making it happen. Throw in some good people skills, the ability to help others without ticking them off, and being good at finding and reporting abuse. Of course knowledge of the directory, the larger picture, ontology, and great editing are all factors too, but that's the editall stage more than the meta. No one jumps right from category editor to meta, there are steps between, 2 to 3 depending on the person. Personally I became an editall/catmv after 1.5 years, then a meta 3 or 4 months later.
Meta windharp Posted October 4, 2002 Meta Posted October 4, 2002 An easy way to spot this: Look at http://dmoz.org/profiles/enarra.html and take the time to read all those graphical notes attached to that profile :-) Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
Guest Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 enarra that's a very long list of awards you have there <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
MsDetta Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Wow enarra, congratulations on all your hard work <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
Meta enarra Posted October 8, 2002 Meta Posted October 8, 2002 take the time to read all those graphical notes attached to that profile :-) Ah shucks <img src="/images/icons/blush.gif" alt="" /> . I usually have "Dork" at the end of my list of titles there.. have to keep a little humility in there somewhere among all those awards. <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> Had to remove dork though 'cause I applied to a job which might look at my profile and I don't want to look silly. <img src="/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />
Guest crowbar Posted October 8, 2002 Posted October 8, 2002 We have very good metas, <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> in the ODP. I have absolutely no desire to be a meta. Of course, I had no desire to be a state level editor, either, come to think of it. I sort of found myself needing more permissions to accomplish the things that I saw needed doing and I was forced to ask for more editing permissions. I think the way to look at it is, when the work you're trying to do, outgrows the permissions that you have, then, it's time to step up the ladder. <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> I'm right where I want to be and I have more than enough responsibilities. I am very glad we have the metas that we have and that they are willing to take on the responsibilities that go with it.
