Say, starting from step one (submitted my application today and waiting to hear about it), how do we become a meta editor eventually?

Sounds like a lot, but do-able. Let's see if a year or two might do it

Wisdom and the ability to walk on water are also useful .

Took me about one year to become an editall and another year to become a meta, but your milage may vary.

It is a slightly-well-known paradox that those who strive to become a meta for personal glory rarely achieve the position; it is only by becoming one with the directory and working selflessly to improve it that one can optain meta status -- Foe

Two words: selfless dedication.

Sounds kinda grand but that's really what it boils down to. You want to see the directory grow and improve and are dedicated to making it happen. Throw in some good people skills, the ability to help others without ticking them off, and being good at finding and reporting abuse.

Of course knowledge of the directory, the larger picture, ontology, and great editing are all factors too, but that's the editall stage more than the meta. No one jumps right from category editor to meta, there are steps between, 2 to 3 depending on the person. Personally I became an editall/catmv after 1.5 years, then a meta 3 or 4 months later.

take the time to read all those graphical notes attached to that profile :-)

Ah shucks . I usually have "Dork" at the end of my list of titles there.. have to keep a little humility in there somewhere among all those awards. Had to remove dork though 'cause I applied to a job which might look at my profile and I don't want to look silly.

We have very good metas, in the ODP. I have absolutely no desire to be a meta.

Of course, I had no desire to be a state level editor, either, come to think of it.

I sort of found myself needing more permissions to accomplish the things that I saw needed doing and I was forced to ask for more editing permissions.

I think the way to look at it is, when the work you're trying to do, outgrows the permissions that you have, then, it's time to step up the ladder.

I'm right where I want to be and I have more than enough responsibilities. I am very glad we have the metas that we have and that they are willing to take on the responsibilities that go with it.
