Guest Sobeton Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 I’ve submitted my web site: http://www.marketing-online-biz.com a while ago to the following category: http://dmoz.org/Business/Marketing_and_Advertising/Internet_Marketing/Marketing_Services/ Can you please tell me it’s current status. Thanks..
beebware Posted October 25, 2002 Posted October 25, 2002 Your site is still awaiting review for that category, unfortently with nearly 1000 other sites. It *will* be sometime before your site is listed. [added later] Aaargghhhh! I just looked at the unreviewed queue for that category with the aim of trying to reduce it a little bit by removing obvious spam etc etc. I don't think *any* category has scared me so much before. I can't tell the spam, mirror links etc etc from the real content (especially concerning the subject matter). I have a feeling it could be several months before any editor can pluck up enough courage to attack a category like that...
Guest Sobeton Posted October 26, 2002 Posted October 26, 2002 perhaps the category needs more then one editor. if as you say it’s has been bombarded with spam, mirror links, etc. seems to me that legitimate sites, are being penalized for the actions of quite a few irresponsible people. just my opinion.
Guest orbiter Posted October 26, 2002 Posted October 26, 2002 In addition to one one editor being listed, another problem is likely to be that companies register anonymous keyword-keyword-keyword domains in an attempt to get more listings. It it probably pretty tough to tell legit sites from those that are created to get around the listing guidelines.
totalxsive Posted October 26, 2002 Posted October 26, 2002 I've been through and removed a load of duplicates and spam, and also moved some non-English sites to World/ . The submission queue now stands a little above 800 sites.
uzs980 Posted October 26, 2002 Posted October 26, 2002 Sobety and orbiter, you really the got the problem of categories like this. The work there is quite hard if you want to do it well, and you need qualified editors who know how to spot spam and how to find out the good sites. But why should these editors go to categories like these? They could better work on a category about their hobby with less spam and more fun. These forum often gives the impression that most of the ODP is totally backlogged. This is not true. The most backlogged areas of the directory are those where people are trying to make money on the net and thus do spamming and other annoying practices. This is the case in big parts of Business, Computers and Shopping. On the other hand, there are large areas in our directory with hardly any sites waiting for review. It's very likely to get listed very quickly there. And that's why you hardly ever read about them here: There's hardly anything to complain about them.
Guest djharrity Posted October 27, 2002 Posted October 27, 2002 As a consulation prize, so to speak, you may want to submit your company's site to http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Florida/Localities/M/Miami_Beach/Business_and_Economy since your company is based in Miami Beach. PS. Don't submit to nearby Miami, just because it has a larger number of sites, and a "Advertising and Marketing" category. Although Miami Beach does not a "A_and_M" category, it will still be moved to/listed in Miami Beach since regional listings are based on brick-and-mortar locations.
Guest Sobeton Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I have submitted to Miami Beach. I just hope I don't get in trouble, for submitting to two areas of the directory.
Guest momathome Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 That is okay, submitters are allowed one listing in a Regional/ category and one in one of the others, such as Business/ Though, I may add, there is no guarantee of any site being placed in both.
dfy Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Don't worry. Everybody is allowed to submit at least twice, once to the Regional tree, and once to somewhere else. The people we dislike are the ones that submit 14 times to various places in the same tree.
motsa Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 >>Everybody is allowed to submit at least twice, once to the Regional tree, and once to somewhere else. Um, not techincally true. Some sites have no Regional aspect and so would only get listed outside of Regional.
dfy Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Oh yes, I forgot. Blast! My run of good advice spolied by a foolish mistake.
Guest Sobeton Posted October 31, 2002 Posted October 31, 2002 I just realized the category has no editor. should I be concerned ??
dfy Posted October 31, 2002 Posted October 31, 2002 No you shouldn't. There may be no specific editor looking after that category, but hundreds of editors are able to work there.
