Guest rcrtoo Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 I need some help/advise in getting my site listed in your database. I've submitted my site numerous of times within the past year, but it has never been added to your database. It was submitted to the following categories: http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/ http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/Dogs/ Also, I've just finished submitting my site again. Thank you for your help, Brian
beebware Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 Your site is awaiting review in Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/Dogs along with nearly 150 other sites. DO NOT submit in categories "higher up" in the ODP in the hope of a quicker listing. It doesn't work (your site will just be moved down to the appropriate category again - wasting an editors time: or it may just be deleted altogether). Because you have constantly resubmitted, you have overwritten your previous awaiting submissions: therefore it appears that the only time you submitted was 30 minutes ago. Editors that have 'sort unreviewed by date' (which, I believe, is the default setting) will show your site at the _bottom_ of the queue now. Constantly resubmitting just hurts your site review chances (delays it - or, in extreme cases, causes you to be branded a spammer). There is no need to resubmit - an editor will eventually get around to reviewing your site. Unless, you want to become an editor yourself: admitedlly it's doubtful you'll get Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/Dogs straight away, but if you are editing elsewhere in the directory it may free up some time for another editor to review your site....
Guest rcrtoo Posted January 7, 2003 Posted January 7, 2003 I'm checking on the status of my submittion. It's been 2 months since I've submitted my web site to your directory. Can somebody please advise on the status of my web site being listed? Should I resubmit my web site? Should I resubmit my web site to another directory? I don't understand why it is taking this long to get listed. signswithanattitude.com is a logical web site where a consumer can purchase pet related products. Any advise will be deeply appreciated!
Meta hutcheson Posted January 7, 2003 Meta Posted January 7, 2003 >Should I resubmit my web site? No. It's waiting to be reviewed. >Should I resubmit my web site to another directory? Yahoo? Looksmart? Zeal? Yes, submit to all of them, as well as any pet-specific directories you can find. No need to wait on our account. But if you go to someplace like, say, directory.google.com and try to submit, and it says something about the OPEN directory, DON'T resubmit. That just overwrites the submittals you'd already made directly to dmoz.org/ >I don't understand why it is taking this long to get listed. It takes very little time to get listed. It may take a long time for a volunteer to decide to review it.
Guest rcrtoo Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 I'm checking on the status of my submittion. It's been 4 months since I've submitted my web site to your directory. Can somebody please advise on the status of my web site being listed? Any advise will be deeply appreciated!
Meta windharp Posted March 26, 2003 Meta Posted March 26, 2003 Still waiting for review - please note that there is a typo in the above answer - it is waiting in http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/ and not the Dogs subcategory. Would be a bit to narrow anyway <img src="/images/icons/blush.gif" alt="" />) Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
Guest rcrtoo Posted May 5, 2003 Posted May 5, 2003 I'm checking on the status of my submittion. It's been 6 months since I've submitted my web site to your directory. Can somebody please advise on the status of my web site being listed? Any advise will be deeply appreciated! Has my web site moved up in the waiting line? If so, how many unreviewed web sites are infront of mine waiting it get listed in this directory?
Meta hutcheson Posted May 5, 2003 Meta Posted May 5, 2003 Status: waiting review, still. Movement in waiting line: 'Tain't no line, it's every site for itself, and the editors pick the one they feel like reviewing first.
Guest rcrtoo Posted June 3, 2003 Posted June 3, 2003 I'm checking on the status of my submittion. It's been 8 months since I've submitted my web site to your directory. Can somebody please advise on the status of my web site being listed? Any advise will be deeply appreciated! I'm confused on why the editors doesn't review web sites by the date they were submitted. Is it true, that a web site which was submitted yesterday can be added to your data base before my web site, which was submitted over 8 months ago. In the above message, posted above by "Beebware": "Because you have constantly resubmitted, you have overwritten your previous awaiting submissions: therefore it appears that the only time you submitted was 30 minutes ago. Editors that have 'sort unreviewed by date' (which, I believe, is the default setting) will show your site at the _bottom_ of the queue now. Constantly resubmitting just hurts your site review chances (delays it - or, in extreme cases, causes you to be branded a spammer)." What does "overwritten your previous awaiting submissions" mean? To me, this means that editors suppose to review submissions by the date they were submitted! Can somebody please explain the submission procedure or hints on getting listed? Thank you, Brian
Meta hutcheson Posted June 3, 2003 Meta Posted June 3, 2003 >What does "overwritten your previous awaiting submissions" mean? It means we got tired of seeing the same site submitted over and over and over again (in some spectacular cases, hundreds of times) and asked the tech support people to automatically eliminate duplicate submittals. And they did. But it is the _latest_ submittal that gets kept, not the _earliest_. (The earlier submittal disappears, or is "overwritten.") What that means is: If an editor is trying to review old submittals first, they won't see your submittal as "old" -- it will look as if it was just submitted recently. [This may not matter much -- I _don't_ usually review submittals in chronological order anyway.] But we still try to discourage people submitting a site "numerous times" -- the software doesn't catch all the duplicates. >To me, this means that editors suppose to review submissions by the date they were submitted! That was not at all the meaning beebware intended to convey. (British is a strange language, but it's not _that_ different from the language my friends O'Reilly, Metzger, Nguyen, and Rosenberg speak here in the U.S.)
Meta nea Posted June 3, 2003 Meta Posted June 3, 2003 > I'm confused on why the editors doesn't review web sites by the date they were submitted. Is it true, that a web site which was submitted yesterday can be added > to your data base before my web site, which was submitted over 8 months ago. That is true. There are no rules stating that editors must, or should, review sites in any order. The "Sort by date" setting can be set to default, but it is always possible to re-sort in other ways. There are a couple of good descriptions of how two different editors work at the end of this thread, giving some of the reasons why editors don't work their way through the list of submitted URLs by the date they were submitted. And as far as hints for getting listed goes, there is only one way: submit your URL to the best category and then wait. Once your site has been submitted, it will be reviewed sooner or later. But we can't give any kind of estimate as to when that will be. Curlie Meta and kMeta editor nea
Guest rcrtoo Posted June 3, 2003 Posted June 3, 2003 Could you inform me of the average time it takes for a web site to get reviewed by an editor? Of course, I know you probably can't answer this question. Take care and I will check back with you through my 2 month routine! Brian
Meta hutcheson Posted June 3, 2003 Meta Posted June 3, 2003 >Is it true, that a web site which was submitted yesterday can be added to your data base before my web site, which was submitted over 8 months ago. Absolutely true. A website which was NEVER submitted can even be added before a site that was submitted over a year ago was reviewed for the first time.
motsa Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 >>Could you inform me of the average time it takes for a web site to get reviewed by an editor? Nope. Could be anywhere from hours to years and any attempt at averaging would be meaningless.
Guest rcrtoo Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 Hello, I'm checking on the status of my web site being reviewed for placement in your directory. It has been over 10 months since I've submitted my web site. I've notice that the catagory; http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/ inwhich I had submitted my web site, does not have an editor. Could I: a. Apply to become an editor for this catagory. b. Submit my web site to a catagory that does have an editor. Hoping this will increase my chances of getting listed onto your directory. c. Any suggestions that you might have! Thank you for your time, Brian
totalxsive Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 You're still waiting in Shopping/Pets with just over 350 others. Does you site have a local presence in LA? If so, you may be able to get an additional listing in the Metairie category. As for becoming an editor, that category is much too big - we normally only accept editors in categories with 100 sites or less, and tend to avoid accepting newbies in spam-prone areas which Shopping can be at times.
Guest rcrtoo Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 "Does you site have a local presence in LA? If so, you may be able to get an additional listing in the Metairie category." Yes. My office is located on: 2121 N. Causeway Blvd., Suite 255 Metairie, LA 70001 How would I proceed in getting this additional listing? "As for becoming an editor, that category is much too big - we normally only accept editors in categories with 100 sites or less, and tend to avoid accepting newbies in spam-prone areas which Shopping can be at times." I'm still interested in becoming an editor for other categories. With my experience in web site knowledge and pet related products, I can become a benefit for your directory. Thank you, Brian
jswafford Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 You may try getting the additional listing in this category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Louisiana/Localities/M/Metairie/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/ As for becoming an editor, find a pet category you are interested in. Once you have found one, find the smallest sub-cat within that category. You will have a better chance of being approved. When applying, be completely honest of all of your web site affiliations.

totalxsive Posted September 5, 2003 Posted September 5, 2003 It shouldn't affect your existing submission, no. By the way, I got the category wrong. You are waiting in Shopping/Pets/Themed_Merchandise with a somewhat smaller number of sites . I've deleted around 100 duplicate sites from that area today so hopefully it might help you a bit.
Guest rcrtoo Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 I'm checking to see if my web site submission has been reviewed. I took "jswafford" advise and submitted my web site to the following category. http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/Louisiana/Localities/M/Metairie/Business_and_Economy/Shopping/ Also, my web site is still waiting for review at the following category. http://dmoz.org/Shopping/Pets/Theme_Merchandise/ Please advise! Thank you, Brian
thehelper Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Your regional submission has been included in the directory and is showing up on the public side so you should be able to see it. Your submission to the Shopping category is still pending review along with under 100 other site suggestions.
Guest rcrtoo Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Thank you for your reply! I just notice that my web site is listed in the Regional category. How come when I do a search for pet signs, my listing does not appear with the results? It should since my business and description includes pet signs. Thank you, Brian
thehelper Posted November 14, 2003 Posted November 14, 2003 Looks like the Search database has not been updated yet. It will be updated eventually. I really would not worry about it too much if I were you.
Guest rcrtoo Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 Thank you for accepting my web site into your directory! I would like to update my web site's description and title, since I've added new product lines to my inventory. A few months ago, I've submitted this information by clicking on "update URL" without any luck. Can you check to see approximately when this will take place? Thank you, Brian
