"New" Button

Hello,

 

I was wondering if you's think Dmoz will benefit from a "New" button in categories when new sites are added something like over at Yahoo!

 

I say this because well.. mostly SEO's and Webmasters use the directory to add their sites.. and i really do want to keep track of when sites are getting added..

 

If there was a "New" button in the cat and topic i submit too means i won't have to browse through all the localties i submit too.. and i can just go check where the New sites have been added..

 

Whats your opinions on this?

If SEOs always submitted with the correct site title and to the right category, they wouldn't need a "new" button, because they'd know exactly where to look for their sites.

Yeah i guess you can look at it at that angle..

But when you have over 500 clients to handle their work for it really does get a bit daunting checking to see if their in dmoz..

 

I mean i personally now label all the cats i submit too in the regional place i submit too but if there was something like a new button then you would know exactly where to go straight away to see if the site was added in that locality..

 

I just think it would be a good feature of knowing when a cat was last editored too.

 

You'll be happy to know i am one of those SEO's who label their title and description reasonably well and submit to my local regional category properly.. probably why they get in fairly quickly, now days.

 

I just feel it would be a good feature to see at Dmoz.

I'm not sure it would be useful. We add a hell of a lot more sites than Yahoo does every day, and a 'new' button would probably give you more sites than you can handle. If it were me I would simply use the search tool to look for the site title. If I'd followed the guidelines it would be published as I submitted it, and would show up fine in a search. The reason most people have problems with this method is that they search for keywords instead of titles, and we strip out most keywords from the description.

Actually, a safer tactic would be to search for the URL, by typing 'u:' followed by part of the URL. So, to search for the site in my profile, I'd type in 'u:neilturner.me.uk'.

That of course assumes that the submitter gives us the correct URL, and not a vanity one or a cloaked re-direct, which we will correct for them.

I agree that new features allowing submittors to track their submissions would be a great idea, but they would rank very low on the priority list of tasks for the engineering staff. Something like a tracking number, rather than a published "new!" icon... but don't hold your breath.
