Meta tuisp Posted April 22, 2004 Meta Posted April 22, 2004 Please stop reporting sites with hidden text: we don't care *at all* about that. That's a concern for Google and other search engines, and *we are not a search engine*. Clones are something else, but please report them only if several are listed in DMOZ.
sir NET-co Posted April 23, 2004 Author Posted April 23, 2004 great rule I did'n know that banned spammers are welcome in dmoz.
bobrat Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Since ODP editing is done by humans we don't care about hidden text since we its' hidden, we don't see it and it does not affect our judgement of the site. Google bans hidden text, since it's an attempt to unfairly fool it's search engine ranking algorithm, and it makes sense for them to do it, and I'm glad they do. Different rules for different environments.
Guest wrathchild Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 I did'n know that banned spammers are welcome in dmoz. Banned by whom? We are not Google. Google just happens to be a user of our data. There are people/sites that have been banned from the ODP, but that is for repeated violations of ODP's rules. Do you think Google is keeping them out of their search engine results? Personally, I think people who use such search engine "tricks" to be little more than snake-oil salesmen. However, if there is unique, useful content on their site, I would list it in the ODP. If I can't see the hidden text, neither can other surfers (who are our customers). That there is an attempt to trick search engines does not affect the content of what people can see. By all means, let Google know. These people are trying to get their site unfairly raised in search engine results. Heck, tell all the search engines. But it certainly doesn't give them any help in getting a listing in ODP.
sir NET-co Posted April 23, 2004 Author Posted April 23, 2004 ok, but IMO a bit more of etics won't hurt. anyway let's speek about clones in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Croatia/Regions/Dalmatia/Travel_and_Tourism/ there is http://www.kroatien-reiseportal.de/indexeng.htm and http://www.croatia-1.com/ which wos a stand alone site till yesterday. Not it become a redirect to first. Why? Somply becouse the firs is going to filtered so the second could replace it. Don't you see that some sites use ODP as they "spam" tool? I don't think the the above category is to niche that there are no other sites with "unice content". So having ODP backlink for them is a part of their spam tactics; as one goes down the new one goes up.
bobrat Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Those are mirrors and should NOT both be listed, however they are in http://dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Croatia/Regions/Dalmatia/Travel_and_Tourism/Lodging/ Thankyou.
brmehlman Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 I'm getting a dns failure on croatia-1.com. I'll check it again later. For any further sites that have become unlistable by dmoz standards, please: Post in the proper thread. Give a clickable link to the dmoz category containing the listing. Give the title of the dmoz listing so we can easily find it.
brmehlman Posted April 24, 2004 Posted April 24, 2004 The croatia-1.com page redirects to kroatien-reiseportal.de, so its listing has been removed.
