Currently the process to become an ODP editor is down. You can apply as normal, but you will not be able to reply to the confirmation e-mail you receive. Please hang onto this e-mail for the time being. When the problem is resolved we will post to let you know. Our technical staff is aware of the issue and will work to resolve it as soon as they can.

In relation to this we are also unable to process currently pending applications. I expect both issues will be resolved at the same time.

We will follow up with more information when we get it.

Though now there is a new problem preventing us from accepting new editor applications. It should be resolved in a day or two at most though.

Problem with Editor App?

I sent in an editor application on the 3rd. I replied to the email and everything seemed ok. I have not heard from anyone yet and it has been 3 days. Is it possible that apps sent in during this problem were deleted?

What with the backup of pending applications we normally have, plus three/four days of being unable to review any new applications we are very much behind. 3 days is not an unreasonable wait. You may need to wait a week or two more before growing concerned.

Waiting good?

Would you say that generally applications are approved or denied immediately after being reviewed? I'm just wondering if it is a good sign ever if there is a long wait for an acceptance or denial confirmation.

There is no real indication either way and it can depend on the category that was applied for. The meta's who review the applications (of which I am not one of them) often have an area of focus or expertise and therefore a particular application may need a meta with particular knowledge of an area/topic or language. There may also be other factors that could delay an application but not being a meta and not being privy to that information I am unable to really add further 'factual' comments.

Good luck!

There are a few factors that influence the time it takes to review an application,

  1. Amount of pending applications, the more there are waiting the longer the wait.
  2. Amount of active metas doing applications, this varies while there is always applications being processed every day sometimes there are more done than others.
  3. How easy the application is to review
    • If the application is awful we reject right away. There are always a number of metas checking for these sort of applications each day to keep the pending list managable.
    • If the editor applies to a category that we feel needs to be renamed, moved, or deleted. It takes time to decide what to do.
    • If the editor applies to a category with a good application but all of the URLs are for the wrong category.
    • If the application looks suspicious.
    • What language the application is written in is often a factor, as is the category applied too.
    • Categories with a history of abuse (SEO, Adult, Tourism, Gambling, Real Estate, etc) take much longer to be accepted into (though probably faster to be rejected from).
    • If the application is on the bubble, not good, but not bad, those probably take the longest.
