Guest kari Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I am in charge of http://www.automotivediagnostics.co.uk for a client, who are listed in DMOZ in the following category - http://dmoz.org/Business/Industrial_Goods_and_Services/Machinery_and_Tools/Vehicle_Repair_and_Maintenance/ and could do with some help from the collected wisdom of this forum. The site was totally and I mean totally rebuilt from scratch at the end of last year as the original site was not representative of the business as it now stands. Unfortunately the previous people involved with the site got it listed in the aforementioned category with a description that is of no use to the company now and I doubt could have been when it was submitted. As a result I used the update link in the category and asked politely for the description to be updated explaining why and also for the url link to be updated as it went to a subpage that no longer exists. As result the link to the url was very quickly updated but the out of date description remained. As that was back on 15/01/02 I asked again on 26/7/02 and again on 24/9/02 for some help and mentioned that I had written previously and had had help with part of my query. It is now some 10-11 months later and I'm wondering if anyone can help here as I'm clearly failing with the traditional "update" submit service. Thanks, Kari.
donaldb Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 I think you're just going to have to be patient on this one. Your update requests are still in the queue with a lot of other sites that need reviewing.
totalxsive Posted November 5, 2002 Posted November 5, 2002 The category is very backlogged, hence the long time that it is taking. However, your new description is unlikely to be included, since it uses & instead of 'and', is too subjective, too long and does not describe the content of the site properly. You also should not repeat the title of the company in the description. By the way, have you thought about submitting to Preston as well? It's possible to have both listings.
Guest kari Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 Thanks for your comments. You are quite right about "&", repetition of company name and length of description and I shall change that promptly. I can't quite believe I've done that but it explains why I wasn't getting very far. I would say, however that it is a fair representation of the site's content. I was going to say I'll change it all however it would appear some kind soul has ignored by stupidiy and updated it for me. Lesson to learn here is if you aren' getting very far it's probably your own fault! Thanks for your help.
Guest kari Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 How do I go about submiing this to Preston if I am already in the database without falling foul of the spamming rules?
Guest momathome Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 This is because you are also allowed a listing in your Regional/ location. <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />
giz Posted November 6, 2002 Posted November 6, 2002 You are allowed one listing in the Topical (i.e. by Subject) categories, and one listing in the Regional (i.e. by Location) categories. If you are a business, you can have your listing in Regional if you have a physical "bricks and mortar" location that can be visited by customers. [Also note {for completeness}: If your site is not in the English language you don't get a listing in the Topical part of the directory, but instead get a listing under the appropriate World language category].
Guest kari Posted November 11, 2002 Posted November 11, 2002 Thanks I will take you up on your advice once I can get Open to accept entries from my computer again, as currently having no joy. Kari
