RBAuthority.com (was: Finally... but...)

Finally! RBAuthority.com was added to the directory in Shopping:Sports:Racquetball... But in the actual entry for the description of the site, it makes no mention of racquetball. It just mentions racquets (which could also be squash or tennis). This will not allow a very good search experience for people looking for racquetball racquets. Please fix this. I submitted an update request by the way.

Re: Finally... but...

So, rather than adding it to the description. Can you properly change my TITLE from RBAuthority.com which is just an address, to the PROPER title, (The Racquetball Authority). Thanks.

Re: Finally... but...

Every page is labelled RBAuthority.com at the top and the mailing address is "RBAuthority"...

Going back to our guidelines (actually on the same page as before, but a bit further up), it states that site titles are >> obvious and prominently displayed on the site. <<. RBAuthority.com is prominently displayed on the site where as I'm still trying to find any reference to "The Racquetball Authority" on the site...

Re: Finally... but...

That is what the acronym stands for. That is what I submitted it to the search engines as. Otherwise, people will not be able to find us based on "Racquetball".

Re: Finally... but...

By the way... I apologize... I never uploaded the updated site which says in the blue title bar at the top, The Racquetball Authority.

Re: Finally... but...

The fact that the windows title bar says "The Racquetball Authority" now doesn't mean much when, as has been mentioned, everything on the site refers to the company as RBAuthority.com.

Re: Finally... but...

Because its an acronym! Why is everybody giving me such problems? Its full name is The Racquetball Authority!

Re: Finally... but...

The full name helps give the PERSON who is browsing, a better idea of what it is! I don't see what the problem is?!

Re: Finally... but...

No need to get stressed out, Digital. If you want the ODP to refer to your site as 'The Raquetball Authority', then simply alter your title graphic to say 'The Raquetball Authority', then send an update notice about your title change to the editor of the category. As long as all your main pages prominently display the title 'RBAuthority.com', then the ODP will refer to your site as such.

Re: Finally... but...

Is that going to take months and months again to be approved? Because, that category doesn't have an editor!

Re: Finally... but...

It'll take as long as it takes <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> But not to worry. If you request an update your current listing doesn't go away. So get working on those changes to your site to reflect the new title, and then submit your update request.

Re: Finally... but...

Its up and THE RACQUETBALL AUTHORITY now... would someone mind going in and changing it to maximize ease of searching for those people out there. It will take months for this category (editorless) to make a change.

Re: Finally... but...

If I was the editor of this category I probably wouldn't know what to do with an update request here and would probably delete it since some pages say The Racquetball Authority, some say rbauthority.com, and your mailing address says RBAuthority. Which is it? You really need to be clear or it's going to be left as is.

Sorry bout that! The upload froze on me... It is all up now though... so could someone go in there and change that for me now?

If the person is browsing through DMOZ, or Google directory, or anything that uses the ODP data, then when they get to Shopping/Sports/Racquetball/, they'll be well aware that it's about racquetball (since that is what the category is about), so it doesn't really matter if the ODP title is Racquetball Authority, RBAuthority, or even Qbuivrhgxzy.

Re: Finally... but...

aLRIGHT... I understand... but why should competing sites have an advantage in the search results? When someone types in racquetball, their site will come up DIRECTLY in the search results, while my site is in a list which is a LINK indirectly in the search results... the full name of the site is the Racquetball Authority, so could you please go in and change it?

Re: Finally... but...

As donaldb said a bit further up >> It'll take as long as it takes <<. This forum is NOT here to speed up listings or modifications of listings. At the time your site was listed, it WAS called RBAuthority.com - and until an editor goes back into that categories, sees your update request and IF they accept it, that is how your site is going to stay listed.

And anyway, it wouldn't do you much good at the moment to have the site name changed for the search results. If you look at the bottom of the search result page you'll see that it hasn't updated since 28th September - so you won't be in it anyway. (And, before you ask, staff @ ODP is aware of the huge delay in the search system updation and are working to fix it ASAP: there are rumours that they _may_ have eliminated the cause of the faults and hence are currently recompiling the search database - _if_ that is true, then you probably won't be in it anyway...)

but why should competing sites have an advantage in the search results?
It's a directory, not a search engine. If someone is going to search for the term "rackquetball", they're probably going to use a search engine, rather than searching through a directory. The search function at dmoz.org is only useful for editors, and is very rarely used by end users; additionally, the first two things that such a end user would see would be "Sports: Racquetball" and "Shopping: Sports: Racquetball", the second of which contains your link. Google Directory offers a search feature, but that's because they already have a search engine that they re-use for that purpose; someone doing a search for "racquetball" in Google Directory will find your site, regardless of what's in the title or description.

Re: Finally... but...

I see... so when will my site be listed in a search engine such as AOL or Google?

Re: Finally... but...

We have no control over when or even if downstream data users update their information (other than having a RDF available). They update when they want. I have seen google index sites that are not yet in the RDF/Google directory so that is dependant on when google crawls the ODP.

I might also add that it is none of our business - if you require that information ask Google or AOL or post on a forum that deals with those *search engines* .
