clasione Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 Wow - DMOZ is using vBulletin.... This must mean that vBulletin is King!
bobrat Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 To clarify, this Forum uses vBulletin. However DMOZ/ODP does not, it uses a custom modified Berkeley database together with flat files.
giz Posted June 15, 2004 Posted June 15, 2004 This forum is not an "official" ODP forum, and it is run by several meta editors, not the paid ODP staff. It runs with the blessing of ODP staff, but it isn't their forum. The internal editor forums do not use Vbulletin.
Editall/Catmv lufiaguy Posted June 16, 2004 Editall/Catmv Posted June 16, 2004 phpBB is the internal forum software, so I guess that makes it king then.
spectregunner Posted June 16, 2004 Posted June 16, 2004 Until we tire of it and get something else. The King is Dead! Long live the King!
iKwak Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 I really like the idea of using vBulletin and leaving the old forum behind.
Eric Bland Posted August 6, 2004 Posted August 6, 2004 V-bull and phpBB are the leaders in community forums. Since phpBB has a PR 10, and developed by the phpBB Group I would say they are king. Both have some advantages/disadvantages depending on the user's experience and needs.

Not to argue, just a question if phpbb has a PR of 10 that doesnt means to me they lead forum software vbulletin is ofcourse the best and preceeds phpbb. comparatively there a large no. of features and ofcourse the technical support.
Meta nea Posted August 31, 2004 Meta Posted August 31, 2004 uh oh.. so seems this is not the official forums for odp staff. this forums are just meant for public.. ? The guidelines you agreed to when you registered cover this: This forum is here to provide an additional, unofficial channel of communications between the general public and the editing community :moz: Curlie Meta and kMeta editor nea
musicman2059 Posted September 2, 2004 Posted September 2, 2004 Wow - DMOZ is using vBulletin.... This must mean that vBulletin is King! Bah, I don't care what anyone says. Invision Power Board is still king.
Editall Callimachus Posted September 2, 2004 Editall Posted September 2, 2004 Bah, I don't care what anyone says. Invision Power Board is still king. I rather like PCBoard and Waffle myself ODP Editor callimachus Any opinions expressed are my own, and do not represent an official opinion or communication from the ODP. mdempsey Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 I prefer PHPBB myself. Dont know why, I just do. It has more mods as well.
helputax Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 musicman2059 Thanks for the heads up on IPB. I checked them out. What I like is for $20 a month they will host it on their servers and will give us FTP access to modify skins. Cheers, GT
Eric Bland Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 V-Bull V-Bull is gaining market share, while phpBB is losing share. phpBB has not come out with their new update yet though. _________________
iKwak Posted November 3, 2004 Posted November 3, 2004 Invision Board is gaining lots of shares (and attracting potential customers and vBulletin users). Too bad Invision do not offer free trial licenses.
sambeckett Posted November 8, 2004 Posted November 8, 2004 phpBB is the only free one. The others make you pay money and licence them.
cat Posted January 1, 2005 Posted January 1, 2005 Until version 3 was released, there was still a free version of Invision. UNfortunately, all they have available now is a limited trial that has been encrypted so you can't view the source :\
bs29 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 I have been using vbulletin for years and love it
Editall Callimachus Posted October 14, 2006 Editall Posted October 14, 2006 Haven't looked in this thread in a long time. One comment though on a semi-ancient post above, phpBB is NOT the only free forum software. ODP Editor callimachus Any opinions expressed are my own, and do not represent an official opinion or communication from the ODP. Private messages asking for submission status or preferential treatment will be ignored.
dalechou Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 Indeed. I personally switched from phpBB to SMF [simplemachines.org], which is also free, and found SMF to suit me better.
Editall Callimachus Posted October 16, 2006 Editall Posted October 16, 2006 SMF isn't bad. Of late I have come to appreciate the simplicity of punBB [pubb.org]. ODP Editor callimachus Any opinions expressed are my own, and do not represent an official opinion or communication from the ODP. wjcampbe Posted October 17, 2006 Posted October 17, 2006 YaBB also gets the job done quite reasonably, without the extra requirements of php etc.
