OMG, February here we come.

Thanks for letting us know.

The ODP server was upgraded last night, and another upgrade is scheduled late this evening (UK time) so, fingers crossed, the RDF will be able to generate more quickly, so any errors can be targeted more easily.

While I personally don't think the next RDF will work (since we've just moved/renamed about 800 categories), the one after it should do, with a bit of luck.

Sorry, but I'm kind of new to this RDF talk, so excuse me if the answer to this question seems overly obvious...

I have a site (Anna Sinkovska, Fashion Model) that was just added to the directory (Modeling/Portfolios/Individual/S) about a week ago. Should I assume that 1) it won't come up in any searches within the ODP until a successful RDF dump is run, and 2) it won't appear in the Google Directory until some time after that?

I see. Thanks. Luckily, I've been in the Google search for a long time. I was just hoping that they'd find the site both in their own directory and the ODP's, thus raising the old PageRank.

I'm fairly sure that the Google directory doesn't affect page rank.

They don't need to spider it, they know they spider dmoz.org, and they know they spider the RDF (which, by the way, also doesn't count for page rank.)

This is all based on my interpretation of an official Google rep's statement.

Nope hutcheson. I could cite you numerous examples where with Google using the link: command both the ODP and Google directory links show. Here is a clear example I pick for no reason other than it was the first possible example I checked:

http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&safe=off&q=link%3Amembers.tripod.com%2F%7Edrunkensun%2F&btnG=Google+Search

While the other mirrors of the ODP Google usually ignores, the count both the dmoz.org link along with their own. The Google directory most definitely counts for PageRank. In fact, Google directory pages often have higher PageRank than the ODP equivalent.

Just for the record, the RDF problems were finally fixed.

In early February a special no_catID version was produced, then the normal full RDF dump appeared on 2003-02-13 followed by another on 2003-02-19. These also updated the ODP search facility; and the next time that Google visits, they should also pick up the new copy.

Additonally, the dumps have been moved from dmoz.org/rdf/ to a new server at http://rdf.dmoz.org/ which should offer speedier public access without slowing other ODP functions down.
