Guest Posted December 3, 2002 Posted December 3, 2002 Hi, which software is used to "make" the site dmoz.org (the directory part - based on the RDF data) ? is it downloadable somewhere ? regards sws
Khym_Chanur Posted December 4, 2002 Posted December 4, 2002 The software that the editors use to add, remove, and modify sites and categories, and then turn the internal databases into an RDF dump, is proprietary. On the editor-only forums, we editors semi-frequently ask for it to be made open source, but we've gotten no response on that.

I can understand why they don't make it open source, it would mean anyone could create their own ODP-like Directory. And I'm not sure it would be a good thing, it's already hard to find editors for ODP ! What would it be if there was too many ODP Directories ?
Meta theseeker Posted December 1, 2003 Meta Posted December 1, 2003 I doubt that anyone would wish to use the ODP software to create a directory. ODP was designed before large sclae databases like MySQL became widespread, so it used no central database. Instead it uses the disk's file system, lots of flat files and Berkeley databases. If it could be re-designed from the ground up, I think the ODP programmer(s) would go a different direction. My personal opinion is the reason the ODP software is no open source is because there would be very little advantage to it, and the people who would have to make that call--AOL executives--have far mroe important things to deal with. This is all my own personal opinion, based on observations only.
hmf Posted December 1, 2003 Posted December 1, 2003 I think ODP could benefit from an open and more modern code base. Most feature requests are met with the response that it can not be done due to resource and technological constraints. This could be improved by an open source approach. I guess there are quite a few open source programmers among the odp editors who would be keen to participate. (like me) Cheers Hans (hmf)
giz Posted December 1, 2003 Posted December 1, 2003 There are a lot of specific tools that have already been made by various editors. If you are an editor, then you'll already be aware of the place that these are listed and discussed.
hmf Posted December 2, 2003 Posted December 2, 2003 The editor produced tools are useful, but they try to remedy problems, that should be solved in the base software. Where could I learn writing editor produced tools, or helping with the existing ones? Cheers Hans
donaldb Posted December 2, 2003 Posted December 2, 2003 That would be in the internal Editor Produced Tools forum.
