ddekel Posted July 25, 2004 Posted July 25, 2004 HI, i have submitted the site http://www.hostels-amsterdam.nl more than a month ago and it is still not posted on: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Europe/Netherlands/North_Holland/Amsterdam/Travel_and_Tourism/Travel_Guides/ i am wondering if you could update me on its status. thanks! D.Dekel
Meta hutcheson Posted July 25, 2004 Meta Posted July 25, 2004 Rejected, for the usual reason: lack of unique content. These days, in the second millenium of the internet, there are very few apparent-high-affiliate-income-potential topics where it is possible to build a website directory that adds value for surfers. And ... I agree with the other editors. This site isn't close to the _current_ water level, and the tides are always rising. (For instance, the ODP has, all by itself, over 170 hotel listings. That's what you need to stand head and shoulders above. Come back when you've got something much better, and see what the new water level is.)
ddekel Posted July 27, 2004 Author Posted July 27, 2004 hmmm..not about hotels... :-) Dear Hutcheson, Thanks for your reply. As much as I agree with your statement concerning added value, I am under the impression you guys missed the point. This site is not about hotels, it is a portal of Amsterdam dedicated to travelers, containing enormous amount of info about the city (please look at: http://www.hostels-amsterdam.nl/tourist.html ) articles and pics. The hotels issue is a small side service which will grow in the future. Compared with other sites listed on DMOZ, this site has much more info. Would you please reconsider? Thanks for the cooperation, David
Meta hutcheson Posted July 27, 2004 Meta Posted July 27, 2004 Several editors looked at it already. You are welcome to reconsider your site navigation, to see if you have perhaps emphasised the affiliate-doorway-nature of the site to the detriment of whatever unique content it might have. And you could resubmit after you have added content or corrected the navigation problems. I would repeat, however, that you are carrying an awfully large boatanchor against the tide.
ddekel Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 www.hostels-amsterdam.nl hits again :-) Dear Hutcheson, Thanks for your last reply. I asked my webmaster to make all the navigation changes required. We did it according to our understanding and hope it is much better now. Just to remind you, you guys mentioned we do not have unique content on the site. You were referring to the hotels issue. I replied by telling you that the hotels are a very small issue on our site. The vast majority of our site is about helping tourists to find relevant info, pics, and articles about the city of Amsterdam. Looking at the info suggested by other sites concerning Ams. Our site is having, by far much more info including unique articles. I do hoe the new navigating reflects that above. As you said I was carrying awfully large boat anchor against the tide, so no I am carrying a different one. Have a nice day, David
marcelfeenstra Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 you guys mentioned we do not have unique content on the site Personally, I'd think twice before I'd make a bold statement like that, because there's always a risk that somewhere, well-hidden on the site, there is some unique content... But I will gladly concede that there certainly isn't enough of it! You mentioned http://www.hostels-amsterdam.nl/tourist.html as a place where one can find an "enormous amount of info about the city". Well, I just had a quick look in that section, and I'm sorry to say that the information I found was not unique; based on that, I would have to conclude that the site is not listable. I am aware of the fact that my conclusion is based on the evaluation of a relatively small random sample; but unless you clearly mark sections of your site as "unique" or "copied", there will always be a risk that editors overlook an original phrase, and focus on a regurgitated paragraph instead. more info including unique articles Actually, if there would have been less info, not "including" but consisting solely of unique articles, the odds of your getting listed would have been much better IMO... a small side service which will grow in the future While some editors seem to have no trouble envisioning the unimaginable, we tend to focus on what can actually be found on the site.
