Guest hughprior Posted December 19, 2002 Posted December 19, 2002 I am trying to download the DMOZ structure file (from http://dmoz.org/rdf/), but I get either: [*]Browser (MS IE 6.0) opening the file as XML when I just click on the file - this pretty much hangs the system, as it tries to load up more and more of the giant 'page' [*]The download seeming to download forever, if I right-click on the file and do "Save target as...". It says it is downloading X of 36.7 Mb, but then when it gets to 36.7 Mb, it says, say, 1 second left, continues to 'download' whilst saying downloading, say, 40.2 Mb of 40.2 Mb, then so on ever upwards! [/list:u] Any help would be appreciated!
Meta theseeker Posted December 19, 2002 Meta Posted December 19, 2002 IE attempts to decompress the file while downloading it. I surf with IE, but I use Opera to download the files. I believe there are other tools for downloading these types of files, but Opera has always worked for me so I haven't explored any others.
Guest Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Try a browser like Netscape, Mozilla or Opera or maybe the command line tool Wget which you can recieve via cygwin http://www.cygwin.com/
totalxsive Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Because GZip is a popular way of compressing web pages so that they download quicker, browsers will try to open the files, rather than save them to file. I just saved one of the smaller files to my hard disk with no problems using Mozilla 1.3 alpha (my default browser). I did need to right-click and select Save Target As, as otherwise the page loads in the browser, as it should.
