Guest Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 Hi All I am new to DMOZ so I would like to ask a coupel of questions regarding sumbission of my gambling portal website.. I don't want to make any mistakes and get booted for spam. My site is already in one gambling catagory: http://dmoz.org/Home/Consumer_Information/Casinos/ Can I apply for other sutibal gambling catagories as well - for eksampel: http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Guides/ http://dmoz.org/Society/Issues/Gambling/ http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Casinos/ ...and perhaps other sutibal catagories if there are any ? I dont want to spam so I ask if its allowed to be in more then one catagory. Thanks in advance Jan
totalxsive Posted January 8, 2003 Posted January 8, 2003 I would strongly suggest not submitting to those categories. Occasionally some companies are eligable for a second listing in Regional/, under the town where the company is based, but as yours is an information site I imagine this would not apply. Other than that, we generally do not give sites more than one listing, and ask that submitters submit to the ONE category that is most appropriate for their site.
steveb Posted January 9, 2003 Posted January 9, 2003 While all these categories have some similarities, different categories exist precisely because different sites are appropriate. The category descriptions in the upper right corner of the pages try to direct sites to the one appropriate category. Of all the gambling-focused categories you are in the one with the most rigourous standards. Generally any site listed there could go in the /Guides category, but not the other way around. Basically if you are in one you shouldn't be in the other. The /Casinos category is for brick and mortar "where is the casino" sites, which is a much smaller focus than the Consumer Information one. The Society/Issues category is very different than the others. It includes links to court rulings, legislation, legal opinions, etc.... not anything remotely comsumer-y or portal-y. It's conceivable that you could create a very unique, solid quality deeplink of your site that could go here. For example if you commissioned your own survey of "why people gamble in nebraska", presented the data and analyzed it... all in a subdirectory of your main domain, that sort of thing could merit a look at a second listing. In general though, you are in a very good category with some of the best gambling sites out there.
Guest Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 What has happened to this catagory: http://dmoz.org/Home/Consumer_Information/Casinos/ ? Thanks in advance Jan
Meta windharp Posted January 27, 2003 Meta Posted January 27, 2003 This category was removed - I assume because of overlaps. The sites have been distributed to the apropriate categories in http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/ . Curlie Meta/kMeta Editor windharp
steveb Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 The directory will no longer be listing sites that are primarily online casino reviews. Sites that have such reviews but are primarily focused on gambling tips, strategies, rules and gaming business articles will continue to be listed in /Gambling/Guides. You can see the description for listable sites here: http://dmoz.org/Games/Gambling/Guides/desc.html
Guest Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 OK I understand - Thanks for the reply. My site is http://www.guide2casino.com I have some usefull unique content on my site in my oppinion, but also a lot of online casino reviews, so perhaps my site will not get listed for the moment. If I understand the category correctly - I will need to work more on my gambling FAQ page and also on my "Rules" page, where I also have strategies for blackjack and other games ? Thanks for the help Kind regards Jan
steveb Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 Yes, and remember they must be unique -- not reprints, not taken from wizardofodds. In the future your reviews won't be "held against you" since they are of good quality, but they are essentially blank pages. You need a lot of good quality content to compensate for a site having a lot of blank pages.
Guest Posted January 27, 2003 Posted January 27, 2003 OK I understand, but of caurse it was not the answer I was hoping for Thanks for taking the time to explaine it to me. I have looked everywere in DMOZ and can't find any sutibal catagory for my site at the moment, so I guess a listing of my site is not possibel anywere in DMOZ? ....yes I am crying like a baby right now Kind regards Jan

For a site with primarily reviews, yes, that was the right place: and yes, now that category is gone, there is no place at all.
