Guest Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 ok, i am developing a directory-driven website.. i would like to use certain dmoz categories (only a few, not all).. however I would like to add sites through my website (that i don't want on dmoz, only on my site) is it possible to mix dmoz with my own? thanks, dot
Meta windharp Posted January 15, 2003 Meta Posted January 15, 2003 From the technical side: Of course, if you download the ODP data as an RDF file (see http://dmoz.org/rdf.html ) to a local database you can add and remove links. From the "Legal" side: See http://dmoz.org/license.html for details, I quote it: "1. Basic License. Netscape grants you a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, modify and create derivative works from, and distribute and publish the Open Directory and your derivative works thereof, subject to all of the terms and conditions of this Open Directory License. You may authorize others to exercise the foregoing rights; provided, however, that you must have an agreement with your sublicensees that passes on the requirements and obligations of Sections 2 and 4 below and which must include a limitation of liability provision no less protective of Netscape than Section 6 below. " So as long as you obey the usual legal issues and add something like it is shown on http://dmoz.org/become_an_editor you can freely do whatever you like with the data. hildea Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 What windharp said <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" /> Also, please note: "© If you are using or distributing the Open Directory in modified form (i.e., with additions or deletions), you must include a statement indicating you have made modifications to it. Such statement should be placed with the attribution notices required by Sections 2(a) and 2(b) above." (from http://dmoz.org/license.html ) Hilde
