WebBug Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Hi there, Please let me know the status of http://www.propertybug.co.za submitted to http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Africa/South_Africa/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/ over a month ago. Many thanks Nick
jimnoble Posted September 21, 2004 Posted September 21, 2004 Your suggestion has been declined. The reason will be found within our Submission Guidelines.
WebBug Posted September 21, 2004 Author Posted September 21, 2004 Hi Jim, Thanks for the quick response. I've looked at the guidlines and can't see where I've erred re the submission. The site is a real estate portal for private sellers as well as subscribing agents and is based in South Africa, hence my choice of regional category. The site has also been updated quite a lot since I submitteded it. Should I resubmit it somewhere else? Regards, Nick
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted September 21, 2004 Editall/Catmv Posted September 21, 2004 I haven't looked at the site, but the key word may be "portal". We don't list portals.
WebBug Posted September 22, 2004 Author Posted September 22, 2004 Hi Arubin, Thank for the suggestion. Having given it some thought and looking at the submission guidelines again, plus an article on DMOZ about submitting real estate sites, it could be one of the following problems: 1.) The site was incomplete when I submitted it - it is now complete with no broken links. 2.) I used the term "franchise" on the site which is a no-no by the looks of things - I've removed that. 3.) "Portal" is a dodgy word - it's more of a property lister and is very similar to other property listing sites that have been successfully submitted. Regards, Nick
WebBug Posted October 25, 2004 Author Posted October 25, 2004 Submission status of http://www.propertybug.co.za Hi, I'd like to know the current status of: http://www.propertybug.co.za Suggested for the section: http://www.dmoz.org/Regional/Africa/South_Africa/Business_and_Economy/Real_Estate/ Regards, Nick
WebBug Posted October 27, 2004 Author Posted October 27, 2004 OK motsa, I'll use this thread from now on. I'd like to know, if my site was declined, how do I go about finding out what was the reason was. I looked at the guidelines but I'm still in the dark about it. Are specific reasons ever given for declining a site ?
spectregunner Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 No. We don't go into details because it is counterproductive -- usually resulting in arguments in which someone feels obliged to discuss our genetic backgrounds -- or lack thereof. Try this: Pretend that your site is the site of your biggest competitor, and that your next pay raise depends upon figuing out how their site violates our rules. Then read our guidelines with that frame of mind, and I can almost guarantee that you will discover the problems with your site. If you start this process from the perspective of "this site is my site and it is wonderful" then I can almost guarantee that you will never discover what is wrong.
WebBug Posted October 28, 2004 Author Posted October 28, 2004 Ok spectregunner I'll try that technique, thanks for the advice. I think we as site owners lose perspective about what DMOZ is -it's a case of different agendas - you guys are trying to build up quality content whereas a listing for us obviously means more traffic. Anyway, I'll keep plugging at it. I'm going to forget about DMOZ for now, concentrate on building site content and then re-submit in 6 month's time. Is that a reasonable approach ?
