Guest Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 We requested to change our category because we are incorrectly listed under businesses in "Anaheim, California". Our webmaster is located in Anaheim, while our company is not in that city. Also, we serve multiple states, and have affiliates throughout the country, so we feel a non-regionalized listing may be more appropriate. Present category: http://dmoz.org/Regional/North_America/United_States/California/Localities/A/Anaheim/Business_and_Economy/Industries/ Proposed category: http://dmoz.org/Business/Construction_and_Maintenance/Restoration/ Submitted request: 11/13/02 and 12/16/02 Can you please tell me if this is a reasonable request, and if it is still in the queue? Thanks, Mark
dfy Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Since your company is not based in Anaheim I've removed the listing there. I would have moved the site to the correct locality, but you didn't say where you actually are based. Given that your site consists of three pages, with less than 100 words spread between them, I can't see that it is suitable for listing anywhere outside of Regional . Since the site doesn't give any method of locating your company, it probably won't be accepted there either. It's just my view, but I wouldn't place an order with a company that didn't seem to want to tell me who they were. Potential customers may be thinking the same thing when looking at your site.
beebware Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Mostly agreeded with dfy. Concerete Maintenance Systems are based in Huntington Beach, California. I'd add the detail to the ODP site logs myself, but my connection to the main ODP server is a bit flaky at the moment. But it may be an idea to put the site address on your contact page anyway. After all, I'm just assume that you _are_ based in the USA - the 714 area code could be for anywhere at all (+1 714 however is US only). (fx: beebs slouches away muttering something about 'mercians forgetting there's more of the world then just that former colony)
dfy Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 >> muttering something about 'mercians forgetting ... << Mercia collapsed due to the pressures of the then invading Danish army and the actions of Alfred of Wessex sometime in the 9th century (886 I believe), so there haven't been any forgetful Mercians around for over a thousand years. Mind you, Beebware is probably descended from them, and he still lives within the boundaries of the ancient kingdom of Mercia, so I suppose he can insult them all he likes.
Guest Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Our company is located in Irvine, California. However, we didn't put this on our web site because we did not want to give the impression that we only service Irvine and its surrounding areas. In fact, although we have physical branches outside of Irvine, we have found that potential customers in neighboring states would not even consider calling us if we listed Irvine, California as our primary headquarters. If it is not a requirement of the Open Directory to have a physical address on the web site, please consider reinstating our listing, if only to correct the location from the previous "Anaheim" category to "Irvine." Thank you for your help.
uzs980 Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Well, you're in America, and I'm in Germany. But I wouldn't consider contacting a company if they don't let me feel they have a branch which is not too for from my town. Why don't you show the addresses of all your branches just to show you are ready to serve many regions of the United States?
beebware Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Or even say that they are based in the States - that'll be a start!
Meta hutcheson Posted January 21, 2003 Meta Posted January 21, 2003 I never did business with anyone from Anaheim, so I can't quite understand the prejudice that arouses in the Rocky Mountain states. >>If it is not a requirement of the Open Directory to have a physical address on the web site, please consider reinstating our listing It's not a requirement for an ODP listing per se, but ... it's pretty nigh impossible for an editor to tell FROM A WEBSITE REVIEW, that a site is appropriate for a REGIONAL category ... without any information to that effect on the website! It is also very difficult for an editor to determine (from website review, which is what we are supposed to base listings on!) that a website allegedly about a company actually contains information about a unique company, if the WEBSITE doesn't contain adequate information to identify the company (which might not include address, but in the absence of an address would have to include an awful lot else!) Again, it's not an absolute requirement for a listing. It IS an absolute requirement for an honest, professional company: and you are really selling your client short -- by helping them leave an appearance of unprofessionalism and/or deception --- if you don't persuade them that a website without company address is just as useful as a business card without any contact information.
