kelkid Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 Hi everyone, Could someone tell me what year ODP was first available on the net?
Guest wrathchild Posted October 1, 2004 Posted October 1, 2004 The Internet Wayback Machine first archived dmoz.org in January, 1999. http://web.archive.org/web/19990508064303/207.200.73.135/ However, it existed as newhoo before that. This is December, 1998. http://web.archive.org/web/19981206143520/http://www.newhoo.com/ And as gnuhoo.com. This is earlier in December, 1998. http://web.archive.org/web/19981201072155/http://gnuhoo.com/ (By this time they were both redirecting to directory.mozilla.org, however.)
kelkid Posted October 1, 2004 Author Posted October 1, 2004 Thanks Thank you wrathchild. ODP is just a baby. It's hard to believe that it has come so far in such a short time. Way back to me is when a computer took up half a room. Later,in the 80s,my 286 was state of the art and ran my entire company. I was in this forum reading about setting up a directory. It was like reading a foreign language. Half of the words are not in my vocabulary. Wow! I thought I knew something about computers. I don't.
samiam Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 For some good history, you can check out the category for ODP press... there's a posting on Slashdot about "GnuHoo" dated June 13, 1998, and the announcement of the change to "NewHoo" on June 23, 1998... (and other good, interesting, reading).
Guest wrathchild Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 Well, the WWW and the HTML browser is only 10 years old this year, so in Internet time I wouldn't call it a baby.
