Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 OK, so far, I have been directed to a standard link for a black and white answer that if you have a link to a branded affiliate program, you'll never get listed in DMOZ. Well, I'm not listed now so what do I have to lose? So, AGAIN, why can't my site get listed? www.orlandovacationsonline.com has 3 links to offer customers flights and rental cars for Orlando travel. We provide accommodations and concentrate on providing the best deals available. EVERY, ABSOLUTELY EVERY site which IS listed has way more affilate links than we do so once again, HOW DID THEY GET LISTED AND WE CAN'T? No links to double standard info.please, just an intelligent and valid answer. Thank You
dfy Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 It's nothing to do with the number of affiliate links, It's about the lack of content on your site. On the front page of your site I see links for 'flights' and 'car rental' that go to travelnow.com, I see a 'discount hotel' link that goes to 180096hotel.com, and I see a 'discount condos' link that goes to condosavers.com. I can also find a link to some information about tickets, which is hardly a vast resource. All of the other links go to a sign up page for your time share operation. The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. You don't do that, you either send them to an affiliate, or you suck information from them. For this reason your site has been rejected as having no content. It doesn't matter how much you argue, we're not going to change our opinion of the value your site has. If the content changes, come back and we'll look at it again.
Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 If you are an editor, you shouldn't be! for you to write this "The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. For this reason your site has been rejected as having no content. It doesn't matter how much you argue, we're not going to change our opinion of the value your site has". You should be ashmamed of yourself and I'll be following this up to see who you answer to. Obviously you didn't even check these links to see all the information we provide. http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Orlando_Vacations_2bd.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Orlando_Vacations_1bd.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Orlando_Vacations_Studio.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/No_Tour_Orlando_Vacations.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/westgate.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Attraction_Tickets.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Orlando_Theme_Parks.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_Magic_Kingdom.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_Epcot_Center.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_MGM_Studios.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_Animal_Kingdom.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/universal_studios_orlando.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Universal_IOA.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/SeaWorld_Orlando.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/SeaWorld_Discovery_Cove.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/About_Us.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Tour_Terms.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/No_Tour_Terms.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/FAQ_Orlando_Vacation.asp http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Contact_Us_Orlando_Vacation.asp http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tellafriend/tell_a_friend.asp http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/links.asp http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/sweepstakes.asp http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Tour1.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tour2.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tour3.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tour4.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tour5.htm http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/tour6.htm I'll continue with this, if only to make sure you don't answer other people in the same way.
Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 This is hardly a valid statement is it The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. You don't do that, you either send them to an affiliate, or you suck information from them.
ishtar Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I took a look at one of your pages. http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_MGM_Studios.htm I happened to do a google search for a particularly long string of words that appears on your site. "Take Four: Blast into hyperspace on Star Tours, a fast-paced simulator that will take you on a virtual space adventure you'll never forget." I found http://www.allcarrentals.com/disneymgm.htm http://www.ineedavacation.com/disneyworld/DisneyMGM.html http://www.freetravel.net/disneymgm.htm Thus, this is not unique content. I'm sure an editor with more experience with affiliates and mirrors will be able to find more.
Meta kokopeli Posted January 24, 2003 Meta Posted January 24, 2003 Did you read this notice before posting? http://www.resource-zone.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=status&Number=3025&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1 : If your site has been rejected, please keep in mind that arguing about the editorial decision will not be tolerated. -------------------------------------------- Statements such as "If you are an editor, you shouldn't be!" and "You should be ashmamed of yourself and I'll be following this up to see who you answer to." are not productive and go beyond being civil. The decision has been made, your site has been found to not have unique content. The bottom line is that is the decision. Dfy is a respected editor, and was simply stating facts. I see no point in discussing this further.
old_crone Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Its not the links that the editor was referring to, it the phrase "Take Four: Blast into hyperspace on Star Tours, a fast-paced simulator that will take you on a virtual space adventure you'll never forget." which is on your site and on the links he provided. All it means is that your content (at least on the page the editor viewed) is not unique by definition.
Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Old Crone. Thank You, you actually gave me a valid answer, you explained why that text is not unique and for that, I thank you. My gripe from above was the comment made by dfy who said The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. You don't do that, you either send them to an affiliate, or you suck information from them. There was no need for that comment whatsoever! Based on that comment, that person should not be an editor.
totalxsive Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 dfy is one of around 300 editors, like myself, who have been given a higher status by ODP staff. To get this status, you have to prove that you a capable and dedicated editor. I don't think he intended to offend you.
dfy Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 >> Obviously you didn't even check these links to see all the information we provide << Just to make sure I was being fair to you, I randomly checked some of your information pages: http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Disney_Epcot_Center.htm Picked the phrase "Cap the day off with IllumiNations" Google shows the exact same text on www.ineedavacation.com/disneyworld/Epcot.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/universal_studios_orlando.htm Picked the phrase "Find out what really goes into and oozes out of movie monsters" Google shows the exact same text on www.ineedavacation.com/universalmco/UniversalStudios.html http://www.orlandovacationsonline.com/Universal_IOA.htm Picked the phrase "Enter this mysterious realm where strange creatures dwell" Google shows the exact same text on (surprise) www.ineedavacation.com/universalmco/IslandsofAdventure.html Your site is clearly using the same text source as ineedavacation.com. You even share the same spelling error ("Woody Woodpecker's KidZonesm" instead of "Woody Woodpecker's KidZonetm" on your site's Universal Studios page and ineedavacation's Universal Studios page . Since at least one other site carries the same details as yours, none of your 'attractions' information can be considered unique. Your timeshare pages require users to give you large quantities of information before they get to see anything useful (assuming they ever do). This means that your site takes more information from it's users than it gives. I can only repeat what you have already heard many times, your site will not be listed in its current form. >> I'll be following this up to see who you answer to << If you believe that you are being treated unfairly by me specifically, you are free to send e-mail to anyone you see in these fora with the status 'meta' by their name. These are the senior editors at the ODP and they have the ability to discipline editors that fail to act in an appropriate manner.
alpine Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 The concept of sites containing unique content is all about providing users with information. You don't do that, you either send them to an affiliate, or you suck information from them. What is wrong with that statement? You ask for an intelligent answer - I would like one in reply which also doesn't insult anyone's intelligence: Perhaps you could explain why your information about Westgate Resorts is not covered by the listed company site (or indeed the numerous other sites which offer their properties), or why your information about the theme parks is not already covered by the listed sites of the theme parks themselves (or other sites which use the same text as yours)?
Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I'll follow this up via telephone to DMOZ (certainly not another "editor") Thank You ps.... sm is NOT a spelling error
beebware Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 How will making a telephone call help? Quick qnswer: It won't. Long answer: Netscape (who you would probably be speaking to) would not take any notice of any telephone calls about ODP listings - first of as they tend to take a "hands off" approach when it comes to the ODP, secondly the person you are likely to speak to will have very little knowledge of the ODP (there are two staff members - hence the chance you you catching one of them when they are available is low: there is a reason why there is no telephone number mentioned on the ODP) and thirdly no site is guaranteed a listing anyway. A number of editors have decided not to list your sites for a few reasons and so your site is not going to be listed - that's it plain and simple.
Guest applied321 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Thank you but I am not looking for any more replies, I already have the information I need from someone else. Editors do answer to someone else and although I have received replies, it's the double standard and conduct issues I am concerned with. Thank You and have a nice weekend.
