SarahBoise Posted October 15, 2004 Posted October 15, 2004 With the same comments: "While we are always looking for new editors, I am afraid we cannot accept your application at this time due to the titles and/or descriptions from your sample URLs. I sincerely hope you will re-apply in the near future." I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or how to better write the titles and descriptions. I think I wrote them well, but maybe not... =/ Can you offer any advice? -Sarah PS. I received my 2nd decline 10 minutes after I applied! My first took several days. Is this normal?
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted October 15, 2004 Editall/Catmv Posted October 15, 2004 This is outside the scope of this forum, but some editors will provide a little more critique of your application than others. However, non-Meta's are not encouraged to do so. If it was really rejected as quickly as you say it was, there must have been something obviously wrong with your submissions. It might be the case that if you can't see it -- possibly with a few pointers -- you're not Editor material. Again, this is just conjecture.

I'm not inclined to accept that I'm incapable of editing given my professional and educational background. I do commend you folks for your efforts-- however, I'm sure I could learn the ropes quickly. Pointers would excellent. I've searched the site and not found anything that applies to my situation. Can you offer any guidance?
gboisseau Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Sarah, If you are really passionate about becoming an editor, do not give up. Some of us were rejected more the 2 times before finally being accepted. The ODP needs good quality editors that not only find sites that are listable and wite descriptions and titles, but those who care about what they are doing. Be truthful in your application. Look at the other listed sites in the category you are applying to. See how the title is written as well as the description. Read the posts in this forum plus the http://dmoz.org/add.html very carefully. Don't get discouraged!
SarahBoise Posted October 16, 2004 Author Posted October 16, 2004 Okay I'll read some more until I figure out how to write great titles and descriptions. Thanks for links and the advice.
lisahinely Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Look at the other listed sites in the category you are applying to. Probably it would be better to look at the guidelines. Sometimes, if a category hasn't received much attention in a while, the listings that are in there are not be up to current standards.

Sometimes, if a category hasn't received much attention in a while, the listings that are in there are not be up to current standards. It is a very small category. I think...maybe my descriptions were too "promotional." I've tried again, this time being objective, so we'll see.
tenjin Posted October 16, 2004 Posted October 16, 2004 Compliant Title/Decriptions Hi, Only the meta who looked at your app knows precisely why you got rejected, but one of the first things you should do is as written above, look at the ODP guidelines and see if there is something off with the way you are doing things. The guidelines are at http://dmoz.org/guidelines/ and are fully open for the public to read. If you find something that should be fixed, make a mental note of it for your next attempt. Best of luck! tenjin
Editall/Catmv arubin Posted October 18, 2004 Editall/Catmv Posted October 18, 2004 If you look at SarahBoise's posts, you'll see she is now an editor. Sometimes 2 or 3 rejections lead to an eventual acceptance as editor.
