Communication after applying..?

Recommended Posts

Hii,

This forums will be an interesting one..

Thanks to the ODP editors for starting such a public forum...

I strongly believe..It can take ODP and webmasters a long way ahead..!..and can be very beneficail..

Okay..

After applying to become an Editor for a particular category...will there be any communication between the person applied and the application reviewers...

Like, i guess, if the application is accepted..you inform them of the matter..what if the person is denied to be accepted as an editor..??..will they recieve any communication...???

Also..lets say..I had applied to be an editor..but not have recieved any communication...for a very long time..

In that case...can i re-apply to become an editor..??..will that be considered..??..

Also how long should a person wait, who has applied to be an editor to re-apply, if he/she has not recieved any communication from DMOZ..??

Thanks much

Hi,

If an editor is accepted, he/she will receive a welcome message per email. (So make sure your email address is right!)

If an editor is not accepted, sometimes he/she gets an email about it, sometimes not. From what I heard, many editors who check the applications, don't send email if they reject, because they got flooded in the past with emails like "Why am I being rejected, you [insert flame here]?"

Because all new applications are checked by humans, reaction time may vary between hours and more than a month. If, however, you haven't heard anything after a few months, you can assume that you're not accepted. In that case, you could reapply, but not before reading some guidelines, and improving your application. Good tips for applying can be found in this forum.

Best regards,

jabesse

(ODP editor, but not one who checks new applications...)

If you are accepted as an editor you will recieve two e-mails from the meta editor who reviewed your application. One is a welcoming letter including your user name and password, the second is a text version of the guidelines (which is actually quite out of date, so be sure to read the HTML version). Depending on the area you joined up in one of more normal editors might also send you welcome letters with advice and invitations to certain areas of the forums.

If you are rejected the meta reviewing the application as a few options. One of which is to send no mail, this option is one I personally never use, but it's up to the meta, so it's possible you have been denied editorship at this point and don't know it. The other option is to send a rejection e-mail, something we can do without giving away our identity or return e-mail address, so that is the normal course of action.

Feel free to apply as many times as you want. Perhaps wait one or two weeks between applications, and be sure to read our guidelines ( http://dmoz.org/guidelines.html ) and follow the advice in this forum. It will increase you chances greatly.

Good luck!

At least you should have received an automatic e-mail reply immediately after your application. If you didn't, something went wrong and you should reapply. That's what happened to me when I applied first, and I'm probably not the only one.

Yes, I meant to mention that. The automatic e-mail, sent as soon as you apply, is to validate your e-mail address. You must reply to that message for your application to even appear in the location for metas to review it.

Hmm yeah, that happened to me too. I never received an acceptance email because there must have been some bug at the time, but I tried logging in one day and it worked. /images/icons/smile.gif

Hii again,

So summing it up...it should work like this...:

1. Apply, once you find a relevant category !

2. Be assured with an automated reply .

Note : If no automated reply is recieved, re-apply again...untill you recieve that reply..!

2a. Reply to the automated reply...

Here, i have a question, if i reply...to the automated reply...will it reach, without bouncing back to me...and what actually should i add in my reply...just a thank you note...and hoping for the best types..??

3. May or may not recieve a reply if rejected .

4. If after 2 weeks or so, if i don't recieve any communication from the application reviewers...understand that, the application is rejected...and re-apply after reading the guidelines and finetuning the application...!

Am i correct here..??

Add in anymore suggestions here..

Thanks

We use this a a test to identify people who can follow instructions. It would therefore be inappropriate to give a more specific answer...

This just confirms that you included a valid e-mail address with your applications. /images/icons/smile.gif This reply is never seen by human eyes.

>3. May or may not recieve a reply if rejected . <

*Most* of the time, you will receive some sort of reply, even if it's a generic one. The no-reply option is generally reserved for a handful of specific situations.

>4. If after 2 weeks or so, if i don't recieve any communication from the application reviewers...understand that, the application is rejected...and re-apply after reading the guidelines and finetuning the application...! <

Not necessarily. Applications are often processed within two weeks, but not always. Sometimes (particularly in World categories), no one is available to review the application for several days. Sometimes we simply get a backlog of applications that take several weeks to work through. And sometimes, we hold off on accepting an application due to extinuating circumstances. A few weeks ago, for instance, I left a really good application sitting in the queue for almost three weeks because the category for which the person was applying was about to be moved to another part of the directory. I planned to accept the application (and eventually did), but didn't want to join a new editor in the middle of a massive re-organization.

hutcheson was joking - sorry if this didn't come across very well.

This is the correct, serious answer. If you never receive an email to reply to, this could indicate that either the DMOZ server didn't get your application or that your mail server is filtered out that message for some reason. Your application won't actually go into the queue for review until you reply to the automated email.

For some more thoughts on the application process see my post near the end of this thread:

contact after applying

I hit the submit button after being interrupted and forgot to complete the URLs I am associated with. Tried the back button, fixing the omissions, and resubmitting but got a "only one application at a time" message.

How do I correct what might appear to the person reviewing my application to be a subversive attempt to infiltrate DMOZ as a secret agent with a devious agenda? Is there a way to append or correct the application without waiting for the humiliation of rejection?
