another application status question

I applied about 2 weeks ago to http://dmoz.org/Society/Issues/Environment/Health/ I think using either storme or wired (I use both) and I haven't heard back. Any news? When I applied I didn't realize that this is quite so competitive a process as it appears and I might have set my sights too high. One of the threads below states that it's recommended that new editors stick with categories with only 30 sites but the FAQ at the top says under 100. Any suggestions?

 

A related question, I could, if appropriate apply for another area - any recommendations for pesticide-related topics? That's the area that I know well.

General speaking, in smaller categories the chance of being accepted is higher than in larger ones. The number "100" that is referenced quite often, normally includes the unreviewed entries waiting for the category. Since this number is unknown to you, you should assume its as high as the number of sites already listed.

 

From what I see looking at the category you mentioned, I would say its a good category to start with. Be sure to be honest when filling out your application form, try to avoid getting penaltiesd for typos and other mistakes and so on :-)

One question here. I would have thought that the bigger the unreviewed queue was, the better the chances of getting approved. A large pile of greens tends to suggest that the cat really needs an editor bad.

No, I believe that, in general, the METAs don't like to drown new editors in a large amount of work, in perhaps giving out more than someone is capable of getting to grips with immediately. As a new-ish editor yourself, I'm sure that you are still learning how things tick, and you may well look back in a year or so, at your early edits and then go back in and re-review them and increase their quality. Additionally, you need to think about damage limitation, in that a new editor may turn out to not be very good, or have a hidden agenda to follow. Giving out a small category limits the possible damage that editor can do. If the editor is any good, then they can request additional priveledges based on their previous work.

 

 

Only META editors can look at the status of editor applications, which is why normal editors rarely write replies in these sorts of threads.

Ok, sorry to bug you again but I still haven't heard anything - am I still in the queue? Any ETA on this? If I knew I would get a response one way or another I'd just wait but I see from reading through the forum that many people never hear back...
